While we don't know much about the technology of the suits in the twenty-sixth century, it seems to me that control of the degree of grip would be too useful not to develop; even if only alternative boots: hull maintenance, ship transfer, dancing pumps. Given this, Reynolds' boots could be at maximum while Early, who expects to disembark, will have his at minimum.

There's a lot of if coming off this plan ...

I actually just watched the ep for the...hmmm...perhaps only fourth time. First time with the commentary, though, and it WAS rather serious about the philosophy.

As for the suit battle, I just wanted to comment that Jubal's suit is rather amazingly flexible. I realized for the first time that the guy goes through the whole ep wearing a SPACE SUIT. Wow. These things are NOT the space suits we're used to. Darned thing almost seems like it's thin leather.

I always did find Mal's success against Jubal a BIT hard to believe - Early is quite the amazing fighting machine, and seems quite comfortable in zero-G. Mal, on the other hand, was as far as we know mostly a ground grunt. I guess that included enough zero-g training that he could do well when he had surprise...

I sudjest you watch the last scene of OiS. Watch Early's face plate. Look carefuly at the reflections. Drifting in space the only objects should be round (planets, stars, moons [partialy distroyed moons hiding wreaker's camerars not withstanding]). If the reflections you see are not small and round try going frame by frame, with mag if possible. Tell me what it looks like to you.

Oh, I've heard the comment before that it looks like a ship in the reflection, if that's what you mean. Though I wasn't convinced this last viewing, actually... I'll take another look with the non-round-objects filter on :)

I hope there IS a ship there - it'd make for a nice little touch worthy of Joss.

Here's the answer, I think, to Mal's success - it was the CABLE he tied himself down with - here's the script I found online, which talks about this a bit:

So, Mal's no skilled zero-g fighter, but he's somehow cabled more securely. Mind you, we never saw a cable, but that's the idea, I guess.

Yup, & bounces off to the left, and continues moving in that changed direction. His ship moves a bit to the right (appropriate to its larger mass), but then swings back to its previous position, as if it's hanging from wires. If they couldn't do the collision right, why bother?

It didn't look like wires to me. The movement was wrong for wires. It may have been controlled wires, or CG, but it was definately on purpose.. the ship was knocked aside, and the autopilot readjusted. The autopilot's there so that it won't wander off while Jubal's in Serenity.

^Thats what I thought too. It was the autopilot readjusting.
