Magons, that's a horrible story. It's a combination of the worst of old-time dehumanization (along gender lines, in this case) and modern urban anonymity. Unfortunately, this is prolly a masturbation fantasy for rappy, whose experience with free women appears to be nonexistant.
I think women are abused almost everywhere. You could find similar stories in Pakistan, Afghanistan, almost everywhere in Africa, and in many places in the so-called "civilized" west. One of the differences tho between India and other abusing cultures is that you can see WOMEN out on the street, in force, in India. Women in India have technically more legal protections than other southern Asian and other African nations. It hardly seems to make a difference in the face of such pervasive misogyny, but there are more remedies available to women in India (where dowry is actually illegal) than elsewhere.
Given that so many young men in the western world are conditioned by the ubiquitous presence of porn (which is becoming more absusive, apparently) and video games that virtualize rape, the problem of male abuse seems insoluble. Any ideas?
Also, while the woman was raped and killed, there were many male victims in this story as well. In general, it seems that cultures that are violent towards women are also violent towards men.

It was a really big story. Even if you didn't read the article, surely you heard of what happened? If not, then the US is even more insular than I thought.
Signy. I thought this was a great article, one that looked at the conditions that produce/allow such brutality to happen. "Eve baiting" the term for sexual harrassment is so prevalent that in many parts of India, women do not work in hospitality and other industries where they would have to endure such treatment.
Like here as well, the outrage is partly because of the status of the young female victim, and her male friend. Instead of being one of the faceless underclass who endure this and worse on a regular basis and it gets not an iota of media attention.

MAGONS- We got the article in the US. It was a big story here, too. Rappy just had his head stuck up his ass when it came out. Yanno- where it usually is.
India is a giant fustercluck, a shabby comparison to China, and not a real good example of the superiority of "democracy" and "free markets". I don't know what it would take to really reform India; there have been so many attempts already and none of them have worked.

meh, I feel much more optimistic about India, especially compared to China. I know where I'd prefer to live any day.
The thing about India is that it is a huge complex societies, layers of complexity, different languages, religions, castes, traditions. And so so many people. It is a fledgling democracy still, no doubt about it, and it struggles with corruption at every level of society...still compared to its neighbours, Pakistan and Bangladesh, its a bastion of freedom and prosperity. And it has this great literary tradition...a tradition of free and open comment on society. It's produced wonderful brave writers... so I'm hopeful.
