I already posted a blog on this, but this movie is too suh-WEEEEEEEEEEET to bury beneath all the other non-movie talk.

So I'm burying it HERE.

The common man is pushed by less-than-normal circumstances and learns what he is truly capable of. What could be more Joss than that?

Hysterical, and oh yes, people get 'sploded.

Simon Pegg (star and director)is certainly approaching genius status. Check out his sitcom "Spaced" if you can (same humour as Shaun). He also stars as Johnny Alpha in an audio version of Strontium Dog which you can get from the BBC web site. Its mildly amusing if you were into the origional comic strip from 2000AD.

I've seen it twice now...brilliant.

This is the best damn zombie movie I've seen since George Romero's classic Dawn of the Dead paved the way for them. Humour, character, gore, sadness, and a cricket bat? I am there, my friends.

The great thing about this movie, I felt, was that it was not a parody movie. It was a genuine zombie movie that just happened to be really really funny. Definitely one of my favorites of 2004.

By the way, the zombie movie shark jumped about fifteen years ago with "Return of the Living Dead II", then again with "Return of the Living Dead III", then again with "28 Days Later". Compared to those, the "Dawn of the Dead" remake was, unbelievably, actually pretty not-bad.

heheh, point taken. I'm a huge fan of the first "Return of the Living Dead".

But I thought 28 Days Later was a starkly clever, if not brilliant film. I think you missed the sub-text going on in that movie. Strictly speaking, it has nothing to do with zombie movies except a similarity in premise.

And it's vastly impressive for being filmed entirely in digital! Wow! You know what that means? Go to your local arts council, get a digital camera and iMovie, and go make your own movies! Hell, I just finished a small part in "Bootlegger of the Damned"... soon to come to no theatres ever.

I always thought that when you're doing a remake, you have two ways to go with it:

1) Make it DARKER, more up-to-date visually and emotionally, basically freak your audience out to show them that this old movie they were comfortable with is still something that can scare the bejeezus out of them/make them uncomfortable. or,

2) Make it freakin' hysterical.

So I still dig the "Dawn of the Dead" remake (for which I eagerly await the DVD release) because it was freakin' hardcore (plus the Richard Cheese song on the soundtrack) ... as do I dig "Shaun of the Dead" in so many other ways.

Maybe that makes me a paradox, but the Brits really have something figured out these days. Hence, America produces bands like "Disturbed" (whom I kinda like), and the UK produces a band like "The Darkness." (rock!)

So who's got the better sense of humor?

A romantic comedy. With Zombies.

Loved it. I bought HSX stock in this puppy six months ago and couldn't wait to see it.
