Yes, I think this is one of those things that Joss purposefully left ambiguous because he may have wanted to revisit Early in a future episode.

I firmly believe (despite any ambiguity desired by Joss) that whatever happened with that ship, whether it burned up in a star, or went back to rescue Early, was entirely up to River. It was programmed to shadow Serenity, and when River left it banked off to port. She sent it somewhere, we may eventually find out where. Any homing devices Early may have would be functioning or not at River's whim.

I know that this may be a little off topic, but it does have to do with the whole ending of Objects in Space episode. Notice that when Jubal first lands of Serenity, his suit has some sort of a magnetic device, which keeps him from being thrown off the vessel. But why was Mal able to push Jubal off it he was magnetically attached to the ship?

The shoes allow spacers to walk on metallic surfaces, thus the magnetic attraction is easily broken by the wearer to lift his own foot. Surely Mal can give just as big a shove as Jubal could muster to lift his own foot.

If Mal lifted Early upwards at all ("up" defined as away from Serenity in this case), then that action would break Early's magnet-boot connection but keep Mal's feet pressing down on Serenity.

I was trying to remember what direction Mal pushed Early. But then I just gave up and posted tongue-in -cheek. Of course, this means I'm going to have to watch the episode again... Darn.

He pushes Jubal off at sort of a diagonal angle. Which is why Jubal hits the ship floating just up and behind Serenity.
So that means there is a component force pushing down on Mal giving him even more force holding him to Serenity.

Yeah, that's kind of what I remembered (that's what I get for not having the DVDs in my working area). I was thinking there was a horizontal and vertical component to the force. He should probably slide backwards, although he could've braced his heels against a feature of the hull.
