Can't say anything that hasn't been said so far.
So i'm gonna comment on the dog.
LOVED the dog, for some reason, s/he was my favorite character.
When s/he first ran by I kinda thought s/he was a figment of Jack's imagination. Kind of an "oh god, i'm delerious and in pain and Hey! Theres old sparky. My dog when i was 6, isn't that interesting."
But the dog wasn't a figment of his imagination. So I now think the dog was orange-rind guys dog. Dunno why. Just is.

Some thoughts on the "half pilot" (in no particular order):
1) Didn't know it was the first half of a two hour pilot. It makes SOOOO much more sense to me now. The show felt like an hour of establishing location and sketching in characters. What was up with that? But of course! That's what you do when you have two hours to launch your story! One hour for establishing, then an hour to roll the storyline. Until the studio execs screw you up and fragment it... ( we should be happy that they didn't Firefly it and show the two halves out of order)
2) Even given that the suits broke the pilot, it intrigued me. To be honest, my reaction was the same as when I tuned in to catch the first (broadcast) episode of Firefly: "That was either extraordinarily GREAT or.... it really wasn't!?" The story for the Train Job just didn't quite jell for me (because of the incredibly compressed "establishing" that they had to do). But I was intrigued, so I came back for one more. Then one more. Then... by the fourth episode, the characters had filled in enough to keep me coming.
3) The idea that a jetliner can fall out of the sky in three pieces and have 40+ survivors is ludicrous. Think Lockerbie (no survivors). The bigger pieces will strike the ground at a nearly vertical angle at speeds of about 100 mph or better and come to an immediate stop. The coach seats are plywood with about 2 inches of foam on them (no ergonomics). Anyone who isn't shredded/broken by the impact or burned by jetfuel will die from massive internal hemorrhaging in minutes. So I'm wondering if the fact that there are survivors is tied in to the "not-natural" aspects of the island? On second thought, probably not. And if not, then it is a highly unrealistic element of the story. But I'll forgive it if they tell the story well.
4) And last but not least, does anyone remember a shortlived series in 1970 called "The New People"? Check out:

I was a sophomore in high school and I remember Loving all the episodes I was able to watch up until its early cancellation in January. The premise was similar in some respects. I guess I am surprised it took 34 years for someone to try the story elements out again.

I agree completely! This is going to be a great show. I am trying not to get too excited though, every time I fall in love with a show they kill it. I am glad to see that I am not the only one who found it totally impressive. I am not quite as into as I was Firefly, after its first showing, but I'm sure its just going to get better and better. As if I need another show to obsess about.

It is on ABC, Wednesdays at 8pm Eastern/Pacific and 7pm Central/Mountain time. The second half of the pilot will be this Wednesday, September 29, but they will be repeating the first two hours on Saturday, October 2, at the same times.

In an interview with the show's writers, this was actually brought up. The answer was rather a winking "I've got a secret" kind of thing.

Curiouser and curiouser! OK, I'll give them time to take that thought someplace interesting. So, in the interest of recreational speculation, here's what I have seen in the first episode, read (or heard other people such as you say they've read/heard) about the series:

2) The show's creators say it isn't a dinosaur.
3) It is agressive, but it didn't eat its one victim (thus far).

5) In the trailor for the second episode, there was a glimpse of a scene where they get the radio transceiver to work but they don't hear anything that sounds like English (in fact, it didn't even sound human).
6) The reason that the pilot said they were so far off course is that their radio quit working, so they were making to the nearest airport that they could land at. Radio quit working?
Speculations:
1) Passed over to an alternate universe in flight. The flight radio stopped working because they weren't "in Kansas" anymore. The thing living in the bushes is some large predator in that version of Earth. The voices on the radio aren't English (or human) because the speakers aren't English (or human).
2) The island is a lab for unholy genetic (or robotic?) engineering by some corporation or gov't. The voices on the radio aren't English or human sounding because they are encrypted.
Any other ideas out there?
I know that such speculations are vastly premature. It's a joke among engineers that with one data point you can define a line. With two points you can define a curve. With 3 points you can define a family of curves.
For those who aren't engineers (or mathematicians), what that last paragraph means is that it's always possible to draw false conclusions from too little input information. But its always so much fun to try!

Fox comes in really poorly at my house (as in you have to sit just right on the couch so it doesn't explode into a snowstorm of static), but i still watched firefly...
