LOST: wow, another rare TV gem

just fyi, the pilot for Lost was actually a 2-hour movie. But the geniuses at ABC decided it was more important to have a 2-hour Bachelor premier than what's considered by most critics to be the best new show of the year. I'm not saying you have to like it, I'm just saying fewer people would like Serenity (ep) if they'd just seen the first half, then had to wait a week for the second. I think people not sure about it should see the second half next week before making their decision.

That's a good point. In fact, at least my local ABC affiliate (and maybe yours too, if you check), is going to show the entire two hour pilot the Saturday following the showing of the second half (next Wednesday). I am going to watch the whole two hour premiere at that time just to see it the way it was intended.
I wasn't terribly excited by what I saw last night, but it was only the first half of what they intended to show. Would you automatically say that Sonny and Cher sucked just because you saw Sonny perform by himself? Or Simon and Garfunkel if you just saw "and Garfunkel" perform. What if Butch and Sundance had just been "Butch"?
I think it's best to reserve judgment until they've shown both halves of the pilot...

It is a little early for me to make a call yet. I watched it all the way through and was just kind of like....."Huh."
I must admit the "creature" thing threw me a bit. I guess it is the element of danger and the unknown the show needs to terrorize the characters, but I found it a bit lame.

I know it's only the first half of a two hour pilot (when are the networks going to learn, and just air the damn pilot that the creators give them, never I guess), but I loved it. The first ten minutes were incredible IMO. I had been looking forward to this show for a while, and knew that there were going to be some sort of mysterious creatures terrorizing the survivors so it did not bother me at all. I think it has great potential and can't wait till the next ep. Also, one thing I think Abrams and Joss have in common, which is a rarety in tv today, is that they both produce and direct cinema quality tv. I thought it looked great and I really enjoyed it. But for the record, Joss is still the man.

I've never seen Lost and I've never seen Alias; however, I'm a die-hard Nikita fan. I laid out $150 for the season 2 box set.
Nikita and Firefly are two of my favorites shows of the past 40 years.

I never saw the series, but the film it was based on -- La Femme Nikita -- is one of my favorites. I even liked the watered down American remake, Point of No Return.
Luc Besson is an incredible filmmaker. Although, I have to admit that his latest -- Taxi -- looks like pure crapola.

Ha! I'm almost hoping it is a new version of Land of the Lost. I'd love to see what they could do with some of the concepts from that show in a different format. I remember there being all sorts of great elements like the "land" being in a small pocket universe that intersects our universe at different places and points in time. If I remember correctly, Theodore Sturgeon and some other classic sci-fi writers wrote a number of the scripts for Land of the Lost.

Alias is no Firefly and Abrams is no Joss, BUT they were both smart enough to cast Gina Torres in their shows.
I've only seen the first season of Alias (which owes a heavy debt to Buffy), and I liked it--although I find it very hit and miss. The spy/action, Sydney's father part of the show was great, while the 20-something drama part of the show was slow and painful. I've heard that that changes in later seasons. and hey, Gina Torres kicking ass--you can't go wrong with that.

I've actually seen the whole 2-hour pilot already, and let me tell you, for anyone that's thinking "maybe", WATCH THE SECOND HALF. The whole creature thing, in particular, turns out to be a lot more interesting than you'd think, and a couple of the characters are most emphatically not what you'd expect. Some of the more stereotypical ones turn out not to be.
The second half is at least twice as good as the first; they should have shown it all at once.
