Clark Gregg, who played S.H.I.E.L.D Agent Phil Coulson on Coulson's return from death:

“What about Coulson?” And obviously, the first question, was, “Will this upset the integrity of what we did in ‘The Avengers?’” You don’t want to do that. I worked in comics and TV and fantasy for a long time, and I know that there’s a right way and a wrong way to do stuff like that.
It’s like, “If we were going to have Coulson, how would we even do it?” Well, we’d do exactly this. That’s what I pitched, that’s what’s in the script, word for word, and it’s all about earning everything, so that people don’t feel that you lied, or that you pulled one over on them, that you have an explanation that you buy.

When Coulson was "killed" in the Avengers, I'm sure he hadn't died. If Captain America can awaken after 70 years in ice with his heart and breathing stopped, why not a SHIELD agent?

I'm very curious how they're going to pull it off. I heard some people saying it's sort of going to be a mystery running through the whole first season. I like that idea a bit, but I worry that a mass audience won't have the patience for that. They'll probably want an explanation in the first episode.
