Hahahaha, Ghoulman! Love it!!!
I'm an English major at Berkeley (which by no means makes me an expert or anything), but we are taught to "close read" what we are being currently analyzing. I've learned that not everything is truely symbolism or foreshadowing, so while there is vague evidence of certain mysterious things going on in regards to Inara, I think it's just that: vague -- too vague to come to any hard speculative conclusions.
Anyway, I'vce always thought Jayne had the most potential for mysterious doings in the past. He'll fight for whichever man can pay him the most, so who has he fought for/with in the past?? Kinda makes you think... Plus, his uncanny friendship with Book (who has obvious Alliance ties) and River's constant antagonizing behavior towars Jayne (even pre Ariel) make me wonder if Jayne may have had something to do with the Academy...

Whoops, thanks for setting me straight. I haven't really had time to watch all of the commentary on all of the episodes yet. Thanks.

Hmmm...
I can't picture Inara as a 'druggie'. I'd like to think she's just as classy (In a companion-type way, I guess. Only Joss could convince me a whore has class!
) as she seems.
That she's dying is an interesting theory though, I hope we get some light shed on all this in the movie!

I'm not saying Jayne's intelligent enough to have been high up in the organization, just that muscle for hire willing to do anything for enough money can be very dangerous, and veryuseful to the Academy. In my opinion, the Academy would have to hire individuals without many scruples to to perfom some of the torturous activities which must have gone on at the Academy. Jayne may have the qualitites to have been one of them. We don't know how long he's been with Serenity. All I'm saying is that Jayne could have a very interesting past, Academy or otherwise.

Instead of dying, I think Inara IS tryin to live forever. Why'd she leave the 'Whore Academy' anyway? Could be that she's afraid of being found out. In HoG, Nandi said Inara was a sure bet to run that place, and was surprised she left at all. When they meet, Nandi comments that Inara hadn't changed at all. ( Reminds me of Gandalf and his comment to Bilbo in FOTR.. ." you haven't aged a day" ) Perhaps Inara's syringe is full of some sort of elixor that , if taken all at once, turns her into some sort of immortal warrior goddess.
I find this idea appealing, and it leads me to some cool places:
Inara says a registered Companion must return for regular medical checkups, to retain her status. If this were false, it seems too easily uncovered (for example, the truth might have come out-popped up-I can't seem to find my way out of these images-when Mal was with Nandi). So Inara wouldn't say it unless it were true.
And if she isn't aging, that would seem even more easily discovered in a medical exam. So, I don't think Inara left the Academy to avoid detection; the Guild knows she isn't aging, and has its own reasons for sending her out into the 'verse.
Or maybe they didn't exactly send her, but both she & Guild leadership were afraid that, if she stayed, her condition was sure to be discovered by BlueSun, whereupon Inara would become another experimental subject.
Or maybe there is a birthright lottery for Academy members, and Inara is @the end of a seven generation line of daughters of Academy members. Perhaps temporary birth control methods are still less than foolproof, and Inara evolved with ova of low sensitivity to sperm. Now suppose this evolution doesn't result in her body simply rejecting the sperm, but absorbing the DNA on a molecular-genetic level. Inara could be nigh on immortal, so long as she has customers. 'Course she'd want to be careful to include female clients, lest her voice deepen & her beard grow. And all I gotta say is, if Mal ever finds a few sharp, bristly hairs on her back, he should be afraid -- be very afraid.
World is spinning fast now; hope I can hang on.
