Gotta agree w/ some of the review.

While there were some undeniably amazing scenes, here or there, which were masterfully done, there are also other scenes, and sub plots brought up, or expanded on, which simply didn't need to be - at all.

I'm not so much surprised at the excellent parts of the movie,but I am very much disappointed at so much of the rest of the film. Other than rushing through it, or cutting cost, I really don't see what was the point.

Wow. I think this reviewer is directing his anger in the wrong direction, if he feels that his country sold itself out. This seems more about what New Zealand felt compelled to do to have filming performed in their country, and less about Peter Jackson enslaving that country.

Next time he should perhaps encourage his countrymen and representatives to say "No" if they are getting a raw deal.

New Zealand was free to answer yes or no, but either way Peter Jackson was an asshole, as was the captain of the S.S. Walden in Out of Gas who said to Mal 'you would have done the same in my place'.

For allowing New Zealand to keep its claim to The Hobbit, New Zealand taxpayers had to agree to Warner Brothers getting reported tax rebates of 75% of the film’s budget. Warner Brothers got an award for The Worst Transnational Corporation Operating in New Zealand in 2010 and Peter Jackson got Quisling of the Year (a term named after Norwegian Prime Minister Vidkun Quisling who sold his own country out and actively collaborated with the Nazi takeover in 1940).

Even a 75% rebate means 25% of over 300 million they never would have seen. And knowing something about film rebates, there is no way that it applied to the entire budget (rebated cannot be applied to equipment, for instance).

And just becuase some people have a grudge, it doesn't make all their complaints worthwhile. There are LOTS of Kiwi who are very happy with the industry Jackson has brought to their country.

Having looked up his receiving that award - every blog that mentions it is written like some angry/paranoid PiranteNews with an accent vibe...

There is the sheer hypocrisy of various parties doing everything they can to maximize how much money they can screw out of a small country – all to make a series of films where the overriding theme by Tolkien was one about the perils of greed.

Hello,

I understand that, but if the deal was not favorable, why should they want to keep their claim to The Hobbit?

If the deal was a bad one, the answer ought to have been, "Thank you but no Thank you. We think we are worth XYZ and that it is worth your while to do business here. No one else offers the vistas/environment/etc that we offer. So either come up with a better deal or allow your film to suffer by virtue of using inferior locations."

Have you not seen enough episodes of Firefly to make you a little suspicious of Prime Ministers and Parliaments? That was one of Firefly's big themes.

Rather than an equatable contract between corporations, where all the costs are known in detail by both sides, think of the Hobbit more cynically. Try imagining the Hobbit vs New Zealand deal being about threats & bribes and accepting graft.
