Hobbit Reviews Wanted

Hello,
I have acquired tickets to a showing this weekend. I have been glued to the rottentomatoes reviews. Mixed bag. Somewhat ominous. I want to keep my expectations grounded in reality, so I read the bad ones first.
I invite anyone who has seen the movie to post a review here. I am anxious for Fireflyfan perspective.

Going to see it tonight, at midnight.
One second hand review I've heard, is very favorable, though I've tried to steer clear of reviews, trailers and even a list of the cast.
I'll avoid giving too many details, at first, and let others see it for themselves, before commenting , other than if I liked the movie, or not.

Work has gotten busy this past week, and not only will I not be able to make a midnight showing tonight, I might not get the chance to see it tomorrow either. Hopefully Saturday.

Hee hee... I had planned to go w/ one friend to the midnight showing, but since their schedule wasn't really friendly towards staying out late, we decided to go see it on Friday, after lunch.
They don't know I'll have already seen it, so this should be interesting.

Incidentally, are you seeing it 2D, 3D, 24 frames, 48 frames?
There seems to be some controversy over the technology.

2D, dunno of the frames. Guess I can check that out. I saw one movie in 3D, maybe the Avengers ? I wasn't really impressed w/ experience.

OK, some quick first impressions, no spoilery, as I can, on The Hobbit.
Excessive embellishment. Now, it can be seen as a clever way of presenting the story ( I'm guessing that's how PJ will spin it ) , and I do appreciate this and that, here and there. But good grief... Somewhere, among the needlessly extra scenes and plots, you can actually spot the story of The Hobbit, as Tolkien wrote it. But ya gotta be paying attention.
Peter Jackson's obsession of the cliff shot. Dude LOVES, more than ANYTHING, to perch characters inches away from 1000 ft drop offs, or have them amble along ridiculously narrow mountain trails. More than Joss loves killing off beloved characters, even. It's a bit much.
Martin Freeman does a fine young Bilbo. More in line w/ how I imagine the character to be, than Ian Holm,
Good flick ? Sure. I'd give it a B.

I liked it. It was obviously a bit drawn out. I'm sure they could have fit all the relevant stuff into 2 movies. Whatever it was still good. Had a friend who never read the book who was bored. I could see that being a big dividing factor. If you have some idea of what to expect going in then you won't be disappointed. If you're expecting a lord of the rings movie then it's just not going to be the same scale.

There were definitely some changes thrown in here or there.
Pretty much right off the bat they seemed to have changed how Bilbo ends up going along. I thought that he was fairly wishy washy on it and it took Gandalf startling him and waking him up and basically running him out the door without thinking for it all to get started. Instead they have Bilbo decide on his own at the last minute to join the company.
There was more about the necromancer. I take it that is going to be a major plot point with the council going after him. That's a logical way for them to extend the story.
Riddles in the dark were spot on IMO. This was one of the things my friend complained about. He didn't think they needed to go through so many riddles. I think they even cut one of them. It was cool. Though finding the ring was retconned. Instead of stumbling on it like they said in LotR he just sees it in the glow of sting and picks it up. Seems an odd point to retcon. Just have him trip and fall on the ring. Easy peasy.
I was really glad the wargs were wolflike. I thought that maybe the things the orcs rode in LotR were supposed to be wargs but they didn't really look like wolves to me. Glad to see that the wargs are about how I imagined them.
I'm not a tolkien buff, but there is like a leader of the orcs who has a history with thorin. That seemed like it was added in to give the chases and fights more weight.
We don't get to see Smaug. I mean we see like a tail and an eye and a leg but never a full shot of him.
It ends with the eagles saving the company from the orcs & wargs. It's unclear if it will start the next movie with the eagles or if they just skipped the eagles feeding and helping the company. I think it would be better if they went into that a little more. That was a complaint of a lot of the people I saw the movie with. "Why didn't they just call the eagles from the start instead of walking?" Dude the eagles aren't a taxi service. They're not fans of goblins and orcs so they'll help out to thwart some evil, but they're not just going to give rides to people for any old journey. It would be nice if they cleared that up a little.
I gotta say one of the worst parts of the movie is that the ending is so abrupt. It didn't really feel like a good stopping point. Sure they just escaped one peril on their journey, but it didn't seem like a conclusion to anything. Even "to be continued..." tv shows usually end on a much better note. It would have almost been better to end on a cliff hanger. Quite literally they could have ended with the dwarfs hanging in the tree over a cliff. Maybe end with Thorin falling. Then they could start the next movie with the eagles swooping in to save the day.
