Ugh. I'd like to hear women conservatives' reaction to this.
It's not personal. It's just war.

I think this is weird. Can't people just be themselves?
As for the 50s, the closest I want to get to them is the yummy hamburger joint with amazing milkshakes, black and white checkered floors, waitresses with poodle skirts and jukeboxes with old songs in them. I really like places like that, they include all that was good about the 50s and leave out the luh suh.

Well me, I didn't give it much thought. It is, after all, FauxNews...so my expectations aren't very high. On top of that, it's obviously an attempt to refute the "war on women", which they've been trying to do all along. It's just silly FauxNews doing their silly FauxNews thing. I think the only ones who would take them seriously are in their audience, and a lot of the people in their audience ARE stuck in the '50s anyway.
So I didn't give it any attention, tho' I see it's riled up some here. I do think there is a problem with the attitude of some of our politicians and those in power, but given they are virtually all OLDER men, they come from that generation and eventually they will go the way of the Dodo Bird...and we'll have new gender problems to deal with. We always will, as the roles will change, attitudes will change, etc.
We have a place like that at Fisherman's Wharf called Johnny Rockets. I can guarantee from personal experience that the burger and the shakes are just like "back when", they have those little jukeboxes at each booth where you can put in a nickle and choose a song, and all of it. I LOVE going there!
Tit for tat got us where we are today. If we want to be grownups, we need to resist the ugliness. If we each did, this would be a better reflection on Firefly and a more welcome place. I will try.

Essential Problem Here = Lack of Empathy.
That's not a gender issue, that's a SOCIAL issue, and correctable.

Interesting.... for as fast as our local right-wingers rush in to declare there is no "War on Woman"... thay seem (un)surprisingly silent on this....
Excuse me while I soak in all these sweet, sweet conservative tears.

The thing is, there's a whole movement out there of males who think they're victimized, that society and reproduction selection favours women and women have always had the power. Women couldn't vote or own land and had to bribe men to marry them, but according to these guys the women had all the power, staying at home and having children while the guys worked and went to war, even though the women never asked them to.
They hate feminism, because now that women are working too, they're not staying at home having children. They blame feminism as they reason they have no kids. Rejection on the dating scene and therefore feminism is worse, in their minds, than having a gun held to their heads. They think more girls are successful than guys, and that unsuccessful excess guys become expendable to society. They believe in order to narrow the gap between the selective reproductive privilege women enjoy, they have to do all kinds of manipulations and underhanded tricks, because otherwise they can't get through to the women, and because women do the same to them.
I can't speak to it right or wrong, but I do think the attitude is very frustrating. I try to be straight up with people about my inability to reciprocate their attentions. That is all that ever needs to be said. I am very glad I don't date. I am also glad that I break contact with guys rather than led them on. I would rather they feel they did not waste their time with me.
There are definitely places where men get the short end of the stick though, like in divorce hearings and child custody battles. I support equal rights for men and women. Really and truly. And the best way to do that is NOT to go back to stifling gender roles, but rather break the gender roles altogether.

Hello,
This probably seems left field.
There was a scene in the recent Bond movie where Bond had a brief flirtatious exchange with an apparently homosexual villain. The villain's emotional issues were not connected to his homosexuality by the film. It was not suggested that he was villainous or bizarre because of his romantic leanings. (He was bizarre for other, more grounded reasons.) He did not wear a comedic affectation, and we were expected to be okay with that as an audience.
Bond's response to the villain suggested a comfort with both his own sexuality and the sexuality of his foil. He was able to banter flirtatiously without impinging on his manliness or invoking any new voice or mannerism. I remember thinking to myself, "I'm glad we're getting here, to a place where this is okay and nobody needs to feel alarmed and the material does not need to be conveyed as an over-the-top caricature."
I think this is a positive development, suggesting that men are growing more secure with themselves and each other. The expectations of what it means to be a man seem to be evolving. Even if it's pretend, and even if it's for the screen, it's a representation we feel comfortable making and viewing now that we weren't trusted to feel comfortable with before. And I think if men can become comfortable with many versions of manliness, they may also become comfortable with many versions of womanhood. This is possibly part of letting old-world gender roles fade away.
Which is a lot to get out of a brief flirtation scene in a spy drama, but it's what I thought of when I saw it.

It's not just you, Anthony - I had a similar reaction to both Code Geass and Last Exile, both of which have obviously homosexual characters and (in-story) NOBODY CARES, not only is it 'normal' enough to not be considered unusual, in both cases subject to the same kind of mild ribbing you'd throw at any friend about their attractions.
Now admittedly Dio is a little... strange, but that has naught to do with his orientation.
Also, in the first book of the third Renshai trilogy, I was much amused by Saviars reaction to finding out his younger brother likes men..... somewhere in between so-what, and realizing he no longer has to compete for feminine attention.
While tolerance is a decent enough stopgap measure, in the end I think the true answer to prejudice... is apathy.

PS - finally got the mini keyboard/case to work with tablet, but new keys are kinda stiff, so this is a mite harder - cool tho since my main PC is something of a power hog... like 1/2KW/hour, seriously.

There is also the British spinoff from Dr. Who, "Torchwood", in which numerous characters have sex with both genders from time to time. There's quite a bit of sexual inuendo...and a fair amount of sex...but it's played "straight", none of the characters have affectations, and two of the women who are straight end up having sexual affairs with other women.
It's gradually easing, and in time will become acceptable by the majority of people. The younger generations attitude toward homosexuality is vastly different from their parents' and they have far less interest in hating same-sex marriage, and far more acceptance of gays and lesbians:Quote:
A majority of Americans say they support legally recognizing same-sex marriage amid growing evidence that the public's become more comfortable with gays and lesbians, according to a new national poll.
A CNN/ORC International survey released Wednesday also indicates that the number of Americans who say they have a close friend or family member who is gay has jumped from 49% in 2010 to 60% today, the first time in CNN polling that a majority of Americans have said that. In the 1990s, most Americans said they did not know anyone close to them who was gay.
There are numerous articles on this of a similar vein, and have been for quite some time. It's a good sign that we're evolving.
