I've seen the R1 set with the 4 thin half-sized amaray cases. Just wondering what the R2 & R4 sets look like? Are they in a 'book' format?

The R4 set consists of 4 discs in 2 dual-DVD cases. Case 1 has the cover art from the R1 thin cases 1 & 2 on its front & back. Case 2 has the cover art from thin cases 3 & 4. The slipcase is almost identical.

The rear cover art from the R1 thin cases, containing episode details is compiled in a booklet.

I suspect that the R2 release is the same as the R4.

The disc content is identical to R1, except that, being PAL instead of NTSC, the resolution is a bit nicer at 576 lines instead of 480, but everything runs 4% faster. The usual tradeoff.

I bought both!

The R2 box set's slipcase front: http://tinyurl.com/4fz78 (I hadn't noticed that the "firefly" title was shiny until I saw the box set cover).

The black inner plastic box's covers are the same as the slipcase except for the missing "special edition" black on gold at the top. See http://tinyurl.com/6kzfp and a clearer diagram of the plastic box's mechanism: http://tinyurl.com/6gf2d

The DVDs have Mars as backgound with 1 Mal, 2 Book, 3 Jayne, and 4 Zoë.

The booklet has Mal on the cover, descriptions of the episodes inside and what special features each disc has. Lots of Earth-that-was solar system images for backgrounds. The last 2 pages list the names of the 12 sections for each episode (20 for "Serenity").

Hmmm.. R2 definitely different to R4, despite the similar cases (the R4 cases are clear, though, not black).

The R4 slipcase is identical to the R1 except for lighter printing overall, the addition of the words "THE COMPLETE SERIES" and (in Oz at least) the Australian classification rating (M 15+ RECOMMENDED FOR MATURE AUDIENCES 15 YEARS AND OVER). It does not have the SPECIAL EDITION or shiny logo fo the R2.

The R4 booklet does not contain the chapter descriptions. But they are on the inside of the case cover slicks. And because the cases are clear, you can read them. This is all starting to make sense...
