Thanks for posting the pics Forrestwolf. These are great shots of the set. The looks of that wrecked shuttle look very similar to the wreakage that Wash is walking past in the photo of where he is wearing the flight suit. Wonder if they are from the same planet.
Nice speculations so far on what we are looking at in the pics.

Thanks, Browncoat1! It was a thrill to get them (person gave them to me - no idea how cool they were - my jaw dropped).
In regards to speculation, has anyone looked closely at the sculpture and the logo on the side of the shuttle? Four circles, three orbiting the fourth. You'll also find that image in the Mandel artwork, though there it's actually filled in as planets. AND you'll find the image at the top of the 'Welcome to Lilac' sign posted on fireflymovie.com. I always thought they were the Core worlds, but now I wonder exactly what they are - why would three of them orbit another? Ideas?

Could be a planet w/ three moons ForrestWolf. I doubt it would be a core world. If it were a Core planet the place would either be cleaned up or crawling w/ Purplebellies. Those bodies appear to have been there for some time.

Browncoat1:
Presuming the intact clothing and state of decomposition are 'correct' according to the story and not just a prop error...
Select to view spoiler:
...They've been dead less than a week, maybe less than a couple of days. The meat is red and clinging to the bone. Oddly, the corpse on the stairs appears to be in a reversed state of decomposition, with the skin intact but the underlying soft tissue gone, when compared to the other corpses, which have no skin, only scraps of (still red) tissue attached to bones. In both cases, they do not appear to have been cannibalized by a large predator (like Reavers); the 'corpsification' of the bodies extends beneath their clothing. Perhaps they were all eaten alive by a ravening horde of field mice? Army ants would do a much more thorough job, picking the bones clean, and neither would eat flesh from under the skin, while leaving skin intact.
The sculpture emphasizes one of the orbital bodies, representing it in gold, while the others are silver (one bronze? Caste society?).
I deduce it was a Browncoat extra who took the pics surreptitiously, since -- as Forrestwolf pointed out -- this is from the 'Lilac' set, and that's when fans trekked to Cali to get in the movie. I also suspect that Joss was prepared for/planned on some 'leakage' from that particular set. It's a bit of a head game; but, given a rabid fanbase, there are some reactions that could be depended upon from those fans. Properly manipulated, everyone gets what they want (fans = active participation and fresh material to chew on; JW = active fan participation and continuing word-of-mouth) and no major plot points need be spoiled.
Joss (to casting agent): "We're gonna be shooting a sequence of scenes in week 2 or 3 of production. I only want extras whose resumes specifically state 'big fan of show' or 'Joss is God!', or some such."
Joss (to cast and crew): "Okay we're gonna have Browncoats all over the set for the next couple of days. Give 'em the royal treatment and ignore the 'well-concealed' cameras they're carrying."
We know how tight JW can be with plot details, and he had to know Browncoats couldn't be trusted to keep a secret. He knows us, right? Joss doesn't strike me as a Pollyanna. I'd bet he planned on pics of the shoot getting published, and manipulated the content (and possibly the timing) of such pictorial releases.
conspiratorially,
zoid

Sorry, didn't mean to imply it was the Lilac set - the set I was referring to was the one Jeremy of fireflymovie.com was an extra at (HE posted a picture with a Lilac sign on it and the same insignia in these photos).
THIS set could be from anywhere, though I'd agree that Lilac's a likely possibility, given what's there.
As for the mystery photographer, I know the person. Actually NOT a Browncoat - not even a fan. Hopefully now they are :)

I love all the speculation on these great pics. I have one of my own to add, I did not see anyone else mention this...

In Ariel we get to see the Blue Sun guys with their fancy blue gloves use the device that makes people bleed from the eyes and nose and other areas. Could those bodies be left over from either that device or a large scale verson of it. It would explain why the clothes were still intact and why Mal has such a confused look on his face.
Lets hear what you all think of that idea :)

Ooh, my first use of 'spoiler' text:

Actually there's a wand-like weapon someone uses in the trailer - I believe on Simon - that looks nasty. Sorta seems like blue-hands technology. Anyone notice that, too?
As for this idea about the skeletons being blue-hands victims, I sure hope so - I'd love more of an emphasis on them than on Reavers.
Oh, and Zoid, I thought it was hilarious! Just didn't want to leave you with the wrong impression about where it came from.

What's crazy is that the 'movie set' here is actually Diamond Ranch High School, which i attended a couple of years ago, and is right by my house.
it's got that nutty corrugated metal architecture, and was already featured in such crappy films as "Orange County", "The Cell", and "Impostor".
this update has blown my mind... because now i'm going to have bizarre unpleasant high school flashbacks when i go to see Serenity.
yikes??
