I suspect that Joss may have gained some juice from the success of The Avengers. If he has any clout whatsoever, now's the time, and this project would be assured millions of fans from such an announcement - Summer Glau Gains Role in S.H.I.E.L.D. She proved time and again in the series, and then in the BDM, that she can kick major butt with the best of the female action stars of Hollywood.

Speaking of which. You know who I would love to see in such a role - the pop singer Pink. This woman is in incredible shape (she does P90X) and was a former cheerleader. Did anyone catch a glimpse of her high-flying act in the 2010 Grammys. It's on Youtube. She's awesome.

Just a thought.

That makes ZERO sense - as there has been NO marketing. Its not like the press lit up with "Whedon casts some chick no one knows!" For it to be a marketing stunt... you'd think there might be a little actual marketing involved.

Far, far more likely that there was some contract issue to work out, and they didn't want to announce until then (most likely to do with her recurring role on 'Nashville'). Like I said - this stuff isn't uncommon.

As for casting unknowns vs. known faces - you also have to consider budget. Large casts (which all Joss shows tend to have) are expensive. And actors who are known are more expensive. He already has Clarke Gregg and Ming Na, not to mention a very likely large production budget, and chances are, unknowns were all they could afford at that point.
