I really like River, she was my favorite female character from the start. she provides a greater depth to all the episodes she is in because we get to see the crew of serenity respond to her in their various ways positively or negitivly that gives us a better veiw into them. River is a difficult character and Summer Glau must be applauded for making her so painfully real.

What I love most about Firefly is that every week I have a new favorite character. This week's faves were Wash and River.

Did anyone else get a total anime buzz from River when she expertly blew away the baddies without even looking?! Something about the way River was framed in the shot and how she fantastically exceeded human potential...

I started watching the show 'cause of Joss, but River is what kept me coming back. gotta know what's happening in that brain.

Have fallen for the other characters since then, and now I have an " I LOVE this show" feeling for the first time in about 6 years.

River is probably my favorite too. I was listening to her speech to Simon about the apple bits thinking "they seem to be making her make more sense"... then I watched it again with a friend who'd never seen the show before, and she said "what the heck is she talking about?" and I realized I was in the same boat as Mal... Should *I* be worried that she makes perfect sense to me?

What is the meaning behind the apple bits thing anyway? I can't seem to make any sense out of it. Can someone explain it for me?

Thanks in advance!

Right, Here goes. River recently threw up. On Simon's bed. She had been eating Apples. Thus, on a literal level, apple bits came up. She then begins talking about returning to chaos. That means she's lucid enough to realize that there's a time when she doesn't percieve everything right, and sometimes when she does. Like she said "I hate it because I know it'll go away" She likens her perception in "chaos" to apple bits, swirling around without purpose or design. In short it overwhelms her and she's using a colorful metaphor to describe it. For a more detailed explanation I'll have to rewatch the ep. If I do I'll get back to you but that's what I have now.

I'm in love with River.

It's a simple as that.

I agree.... the apple bits seemed like chaos, and when she is lucid, she can keep that down, but she says she hates it because she knows it'll come back up. It seems like the beginning of an interesting debate... if you had the choice between being crazy all the time, or going back and forth between crazy and sane, and during your sane time, you knew the crazy was coming back... would you want and/or enjoy your sane time? would you prefer to be crazy all the time? I don't think that River is saying this, by the way. Just a thought I had after realizing that this is what she's going through.

In high school, I was in the "philosophy club"... which was basically a bunch of pretentioius people sitting around drinking coffee discussing these really random ideas. One of our meetings, the topic was "Is insanity a prison, or true freedom?" I think at the time(although I don't really remember for sure), I weighed in on the side of true freedom because of that whole "no rules" thought. But currently, I'm thinking more like prison... not being able to get out of your own head enough to interact with the world seems very lonely and isolated.
