The Science channel currently ownes the rights to the existing series. I'm not sure if they could add to it or not.

No, they just purchased syndication rights from FOX, just as many stations have done for The Big Bang Theory, Two and a Half Men, etc. They may have exclusive syndication rights at this time, but that is not the same as the rights to the IP.

Yeah, aside from the complete fallacy of the rights expiring - Jopss just signed an exclusive deal to work on Marvel flicks for the next 3 years.
Note to anyone - Please pity the poor, poor wittle Rappyboy. He's feeling put upon lately, what with all those facts disagreeing with what he believes.

"Joss Whedon has signed an exclusive deal with Marvel Studios for film and television through the end of June 2015," Disney said in a statement. "As part of that deal, Whedon will write and direct Marvel's The Avengers 2 as well as help develop a new live action series for Marvel Television at ABC. He will also contribute creatively to the next phase of Marvel's cinematic universe."

A deal with all the players would be the way to go here - just saying. Let's do a little dreaming, shall we!
Let's say that Fox would be willing to listen to a prospective deal (not far-fetched since Joss has some juice now) and Universal, as well as Disney gets involved. Here's how I see it. There would be a movie - Serenity 2 - which would kickstart (ahem) the franchise. This would lead into a TV series - Firefly - which would pick up where we left off in 2002. Joss could start the initial TV series and then turn over the day-to-day operations to a trusted colleague freeing him up for future movie projects (Avengers 2 and so on). All three would divvy up the loot both for investing in the project and profit-wise. This way minimizing the risk and then backing up the truck to the vault. Fox, Universal and Disney would each pay Joss 1 point of the profits (including residuals for DVD and syndication) and voila, we get our BDH back.
Or.............
In case Fox balks at the chance to make a gazillion dollars. Joss convinces Universal and Disney to foot the bill for a straight to DVD miniseries (a 6-parter 2 hours each) completing the Firefly story. Or a combination of a Serenity 2 movie and DVD combo. Although I doubt Fox would pass up the chance to buy another Brink's truck to hold their cashy money, this is within the realm of possibilities. You're right that studios have collaborated on other projects to minimize financial exposure, and all parties are familiar with the material and the creator, what is left is the logistics - the actors, writers and other cast members availability. The Fox execs could not be that cynical, and downright stupid, to continue to kill this franchise. So many more Browncoats exist today than back in 2002. Besides, they were smart enough to put it on in the first place, plus there's Hulu. So there is a precedent. If Joss wants to do it, then he could go to Disney and say, "I'll do Avengers 2, but on 1 condition......." Plus I would say that it would behoove Joss to take a couple of points, in lieu of pay (like Nicholson did with Batman and Tom Hanks with Forrest Gump.......and those guys are gazillionaires, and their families). Joss has the leverage, but he needs a shark in his corner.
There are many moving parts, but if it's presented in the right way, it could happen. But it must be now, all because Joss has the juice.

A little late for that now, since he's already made the deal for Avengers 2, although we have no way to know if he might have talked about a particular pet project as a side note.

Question during a 11/30/2010 comic book signing: "What, if anything, is standing in the way of a Serenity on-going comic?"
Zack Whedon: "I think the answer is Scott Allie."
Scott Allie (in the audience, but without microphone): "Mumble, mumble, mumble."
Zack Whedon: "Okay! Now we know."
two's comment: "I know less now than I knew before the question was asked 22 months ago."
Start at 1:20 into the video of Zack Whedon-Chris Samnee Serenity Q_A and Signing Part 1 - November 30, 2010.

Quote:"We'd like to do more with you guys" is a polite way to avoid answering questions about the next Serenity comic.

For many, many months Dark Horse and the Whedons have not spoken clearly about the future of Serenity comics because they have higher priorities, by which I mean projects that earn more money than Serenity, i.e. Avengers 2. Obviously my priorities are more Serenity. So as not to offend fans such as myself, Dark Horse and the Whedons mumble or just not bring up the subject at all.
