Hi,

Just a quick heads up. I now have a possible solution to the Unicode (i.e. Chinese characters) issue for the Blue Sun Room. The solution requires several steps and may interfere with access and posting to the Blue Sun Room for a brief period of time after I alter the data table that contains the fanfics. I'll likely perform the procedures late tonight.

Hi Haken,

Thanks again for working on this issue.

Posted again in Blue Sun Room today about 2 hours ago. When I posted through the new site, Chinese characters were replaced by question marks, as before. When I posted through the old site, Chinese characters were retained. Also, what was different this time was that I was able to edit previous postings (through the old site) and restore Chinese characters to them. I also added links (by means of the "edit fanfic" feature on the old site) without losing Chinese characters. Something that you changed allowed me to edit via the old site without losing the characters. Still, any attempts made to edit through the new site resulted in loss of Chinese characters, as before. Now that I know there is a way to edit without losing the characters, and a way to edit that can restore the characters if lost, I'll begin placing forward links in some of my previous postings, and let you know how that fares via the new and old site.

Thanks so much.

I did a few tests last night and it seems to work. You should try it and let me know if it's the same for you.

Hi Haken,

Added links to my BSR postings, using the new site edit function, and as far as I can tell, the Chinese characters stayed right where they should be. Yay! Looks like whatever you did fixed it. On Wednesday, I will post my next chapter via the new site and see if the Chinese characters are retained...will let you know. Thanks for working on that issue.

Hello Haken,

Posted my latest fanfic via the new site to check Chinese characters. They're retained, and all looks good. I edited it through the new site, just to be sure they didn't go away, and they stayed. Also good.

Nonetheless, I deleted the fic and re-posted via the old site, for these reasons: New site does has eliminated the separate "blurb" and "quote" fields, and just put in a "blurb" field, but it gets used also as the "quote" was before. Since these really are separate things, and used differently, I still prefer the way they're used on the old site and wish the new site were the same. The "blurb" is a one-line teaser, like a chapter title, good for people scanning a list to know which chapter to jump to if they're trying to find a particular part of a story. The "quote" on the other hand is often lengthier, and is meant to catch the interest of someone reading the random quote display on the main page or the BSR page. I wish the new site had both a "blurb" and "quote" field.

Also, deleting the fic and reposting gave me a chance to check out the delete function, and I see that it still very efficiently deletes without asking "are you sure?" I wish it did ask "are you sure?" before making everything permanently go away, because I am enough of an idiot to delete stuff accidentally on occasion.

And thanks again for making this site so awesome!
