Is it easy enough to get into or do you need to know the source material?
What's the acting like?
My biggest problem is what I stated before in the other thread - the trailer makes it seem like a scifi Clash Of The Titans. All macho one-man army stuff with 99% CGI and cliched lines. Now I never completely judge a film solely because of a trailer but it plays it's part. The comments on here that compare it to Lawrence Of Arabia and LOTR have me intrigued and suggest that the trailer really doesn't do the film justice.
In your opinion would an uninitiated scifi fan get the same feeling (or the same out of the movie) or is it largely because you are already fans?

I'm not a fan of the source material either, but not because I'm not aware of it. I did read the first of Burrough's Mars books, or at least tried to read it, but I didn't care for it. David Hartwell once said that the Golden Age of science fiction is twelve. Maybe if I had read it at that age I might have been enthralled by the action and adventure, but I didn't encounter it until much, much later, after I had become a fan of much more sophisticated books. I am also not a fan of movies that rely on spectacle over story, but I won't judge this film until I see it. Problem with that is I have next to no inclination to do so.

Howdy Browncoats!

Chris, your opening post was SPOT ON!!!

Went to the theater yesterday (Saturday/opening weekend) with the Mrs. and before getting there I asked her if she’d seen any reviews in her PEOPLE magazine? She said she had, and the reviews were lackluster.

My GAWD thank goodness I don’t pay attention to those bozos!!!!

The movie was fantastic!!!! I’ve been a fan of Burroughs since my early teens, and I think the man likely had a smile on his face as it screened across the white billowing clouds up in the Heave-sphere! Frank Frazetta was there too, sharing a drink with Robert E. Howard!

Great movie and Great intro for future fans of the worlds that I grew up with. My hat is off to Disney for sticking to the project and seeing it through. The world of Mars is amazing, and although I don’t think I’ll see it, I’d love to be around when humankind takes their first step in the red dust of our distant brother! My wife even enjoyed it so much that she was asking me about the books. A rare thing indeed….lol!

Our physical souls may be bound to Terra-firma for now, but human imagination helps to propel us forward…..let’s let loose of the ground, shall WE?

My niece, Nayah, just turned 8 and I think she may do the same - "Tio, I want a bow and arrow!"
she exclaimed with unbridled enthusiasm.

For me Pixar is the best, although I heard Cars 2 was not so good.

Trust me on this one Lwaves, the trailer does not do it justice. It is epic, well-acted, the CGI is seamless and I went in knowing nothing about the story, except that Frank Frazetta did a series of paintings based on the ERB books.

It is a well done sci-fi movie by the director who did Finding Nemo and Wall-E.

P.S. I looked up the Frazetta paintings and sketches and the resemblance to the movie is quite stunning.

Good for you Z. I was the same way, I thought, for a split, that I might not go. Then I said to hell with it, I like what I saw in the trailer and thought - "sci-fi, I'm there"

Boy am I glad I paid the critics no attention. It was an old time popcorn movie with a good story and spot-on pacing. I'm going back in a couple of weeks to see it again.

Ayep - and OF COURSE, soon as I agreed to take Kira her friends parents are like "Well, in THAT case...", which means imma have a passel of em, as usual - how exactly did I get 'volunteered' for this again ?
Imma go see it with my Ex first, that way I don't miss nothin when I go cat-herding the second time around, you know ?

And aye, Cars2 wasn't that hot, they went way cheap on the CGI and parts of the story are a bit overdone and strained... the kids will still like it, but it don't have the draw for adults the first one had.
Mater's tractor tippin all but slew me in the first one and he does get an epic shot of that which rolled me out of my chair in the second, but it really does pale in comparison to the first movie.

I might go see John Carter based on y'alls opinion, tho I wasn't originally planning to.

The marketing campaign for John Carter is every bit as well thought out & executed as the one for Serenity.

If I knew naught of Carter beforehand, I conjure I'd think it was a fantastic fantasy film in any case. But I like this kind of stuff.
