My Son & I JUST got back from John Carter. As someone familiar with the books & comics, I have to say they did a very good job of staying true, while making necessary changes for the movie medium & today's cinematic sensibilities.
I forgive the uneven attention to physics demonstrated throughout because after all, this is pulp SF we're talkin' about here, not 2001: a Space Odyssey.
The production looks marvelous; I'm SO glad we saw it in 2D so I could really drink in the reds & browns correctly.
This film seems to have more in common with Lawrence Of Arabia in terms of tone, scope & pace than Star Wars, and for ME, that's a welcome thing.
A more rousing musical score might have been nice, or maybe it was better than I was hearing- the volume was REALLY low in that theatre, and just last month I was saying that Sherlock Holmes 2 was deafeningly loud... go figure.
Oh, and there was a reason they changed the title from John Carter of Mars to simply John Carter (but you have to see the movie- it's just a little thing).
This is a self contained flick- no tacked-on 'hint' of things to come, or such (in fact, it play like a one-shot movie). Another big plus with me.
I look SO forward to owning this movie- it might be the reason I finally get a Blu Ray player.
So, it's not Serenity or Matrix level "WOW" but it IS pretty gorram good IMO.

Hey Chris,
For my money, it was in the LotR ballpark, definitely. Loved this. Charming, thrilling, visually magnificent. Yes, Laurence of Arabia. I thought the story-telling instincts of the director were pitch perfect. The script was precise and dense, just the way I like it. And we learned just enough about the bad guys to fear and loath them thoroughly. And thank gawd the female Thark didn't have breasts and big booties (personal pet peeve with alien design there--I'm looking at you, Jim Cameron).
Yeah, best live action movie from a Pixar alum EVAAR!

Yeah, I liked Avatar, but John Carter was a REAL movie. Which of course means it will tank.

Sadly, I saw a publicity still of John Carter battling a couple of monsters in front of a big rock cliff, and I said, " OH my God, it's Tim Allen fighting the pig-lizard in Galaxy Quest."
I haven't been able to watch a sci-fi movie with a straight face since I saw G Q.
Not a review or criticism, just an overwhelming obstacle on my part.

I'm not in the least familiar w/ the original stories, so there's little draw for me to check out this flick at first glance.
Previews sorta make me think of the SW prequels. 
, but with out Jar Jar or that annoying Annie 
I'm glad to hear the decent review. However, I'm reminded that it comes from one who actually enjoyed the SW prequels AND Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

I DO wanna see it, but imma practically have to chain that bratling to the chair, you watch.

Chance of her wanting a bow after watching this, oh only about 150%!... me being a bit of a fan of epic preparedness, I've already got one hidden under the back seat of the car, took a while to find one with suction cup arrows instead of foam, it's a style thing, although she's dangerous enough already!
