I did. In fact, I was following the story on the news since I saw a headline about
our team hadn't heard from the Russians in 4-5 days.

I do recall a simple example from HS math.
Given as fact: All men have noses.
Statement: James is a man.
Conclusion: Therefore, James has a nose. True or false?
The conclusion is true.
Statement: Jane has a nose.
Conclusion: Therefore, Jane is a man. True or false?
The conclusion is false.
In this way, our math teacher taught us how easy it is make false assumptions based on a true statement.

I've heard this. It's a shame something in coffee gives me outbreaks of canker sores, because I really like it, and could use the occasional mood boost.
What reason had proved best ceased to look absurd to the eye, which shows how idle it is to think anything ridiculous except what is wrong.
