To be honest, I'm not all that sure what to make of any of this.

I had to do some back ground checking, because I had not heard of John Carter before.

For the time of its conception, it was pretty far out stuff. However, a 100 years later, I'm not sure how'll the story will translate. I'm guessing some artistic liberties w/ the original story will be implemented for the big screen.

I predict John Carter will be the biggest bomb in recent history. You don't spend $250 million on a film without having a huge star attached, nor do you alienate the target audience by disavowing all connection to the source material. Heads will roll at Disney for this.

Your post got me wondering if there was any definition/formula for "Bomb" - not exactly, here's wiki's attempt:

The phrase box office bomb (also referred to as a flop) refers to a film for which the overall cost (production, marketing and distribution) greatly [?] exceeds the revenue regained by the movie studio. This should not be confused with Hollywood accounting when official figures show large losses, yet the movie is a financial success [??]. Seriously, am I just so far out of the loop on this, or is John Carter really an obscure figure in sci-fi history ?

20,000 leagues under the Sea, War of the Worlds, The Lost World,... not unfamiliar w/ any of those

John Carter ? Not a freaking clue.

Read all the ERB books of John Carter’s adventures when in my teens. The movie looks to be exciting. Hoping it can expand beyond the regular Box/office of sci/fi folk. There’d be hope for a sequel then.
