Will John Carter be the new LOTR/SW/POTC? (plus Mission Impossible discussion)

I read a ton of ERB books in my younger years. Loved & collected them, along with my collection of REH (Conan) books. I am waiting eagerly for the new John Carter movie to come out early next year, though to say that I’m feeling the movie industry is becoming awash with fantasy/SciFi as of late. Super heroes, assassins, spies, spacemen, creatures of the under world & zombies are saturating the big silver screen. I’m afraid so much so that the paying public will loose interest.
Caught Sherlock Holmes this past weekend and really liked it. Seems Mr. Holmes coulda taught Bruce Lee a thing or two.
There will always be an audience that will enjoy movies as these. But if there are too many, I afraid the coin will just not be there. Hope JC of M does well. Box office enough to get a sequel. Yet in 2012 I hope Joss hasn’t given up on FF. He’s the one that talked me into watching in the first place with his bonus speech at the end of Serenity. Maybe a return to the small screen in an mini-movie three parter?

Hey C.
I'm avoiding any trailers for this one as I'm actually really looking forward to it. I'm somewhat curious to see what these Pixar Directors will do with live action.
Thereafter I'm in two minds about film continuity at the moment. I traditionally have liked the idea of movie sagas, but recently I'm starting to wonder if a film isn't better off for being just a single event.
That said I if John Carter is a success I can't see the studio leaving it at just the one film.

I read all the JCoM books so I'm looking forward to the films a great deal. I like what I've seen so far but (and this will sound a little funny) they look like they're made for a younger audience than LOTR & even SW - dunno, they just do to me so far. I do not think Tars Tarkis/Martians look up to the same level of sophisticated rendering that the Avatarians did. But the stories are pure fun adventure and the "look" is pretty cool - I can't see them not making a trilogy out of these.

And, an animation director did the last Mission Impossible movie which I heard is excellent!

What I'm trying to say, Chris, is: as disappointed as I was with Serenity, it beats hell out of MI:IV. My advice: just watch MI:III again, good flick.

I hope John Carter is a huge hit, but from the trailer, and the relative lack of buzz it has outside of scifi fans, Im not holding my breath.
Im betting folks at Disney are nervous as hell. It's on of the most expensive films ever. It'll have to be one of the top 5 films ever to justify any sequels, they've said.
Though I will toss in and say that IMHO, Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol was a great action flick. Ill have to see it again to decide how it compares to 3 (my current favorite of the series). Better direction and humor in this one, but 3 had a better villain and plot.
However, MI3 feels like "Alias, staring Tom Cruise" whereas this had it's own identity (even though it is, in many ways, a direct sequel to 3) so it gets points for that.
