I would never be choosen for a jury. Last time I was waiting while they were going through selection and the first question the defense attorney asked is, "Do you personally know a police officer?" Anybody who did was removed and I know about three. So being a friend of a police officer gets you disqualified.

It might depend on the case. If it involved a police officer as defendant or victim then it would make sense to weed out people who could be unduly swayed either way.
Which brings us back to a jury of your peers. My peers should be as close to "me" as possible. This stems, I believe, from making sure that the lower classes do not get railroaded by their "betters", or that the elite don't get essentially lynched for grudges against their social strata. Neither end of the spectrum is likely to really understand or sympathize with the other extreme. On the other hand, if a jury is comprised of members who almost literally might as well be your clones they are unlikely to find you guilty even if you are. A balance has to be struck and maintained. This is why the defense and prosecution are both in on the selection process, as check and balance to each other. It's an attempt to get to an impartial and logical verdict once the facts (such as they are) have been presented for deliberation.

Which is not unheard of.

Glad to see there was a burst of activity that I missed out on. While I'm glad that the imponderable threads aren't as crazy as they used to be, I do wish there was more posting. My desire for discussion is just not satisfied with one or two posts a day. I need more, dammit. It's all about me, right? Someone post!!!! :)

From what I've just read (this thread and last):

MSA: that weirds me out that a school is celebrating teen pregnancy. Celebrate the stayingin school part, not the pregnancy/you-mad-e-you-life-a-lot-more-difficult part. And what about the fathers?

Celebrity hang out? M'eh. I, too, prefer characters. I would hate to ruin a perfectly wonderful character by finding out the actor is an asshat. And since a lot of actors are asshats, there is a high probability that it would happen.

Million Dollars? Gosh, I'd do tons of stuff for a million dollars. Specially if it was tax-free. What wouldn't I do? hurt someone and I'm sure there must be a few other things on that list, but I can't think of them right now.

hugs to all the imponderables, old and new. If y'all don't post...I'll be forced to run off for a few months or so...and then be amused all over again that I can still remember my password.

That was the hope originally, but these days, jury selection is about each side doing whatever they can to get the people who would sympathize with their side on the jury...and those who don't, off. It's almost an art.

I had jury duty on my birthday. It sucked. I had to sit in the juror's room all day long. Blah.

I had jury duty once where I had to show up three days running and had like three weeks of call ins while the jury was selected with two more days int he court house later. It was a huge case and while it would've been interesting from a legal standpoint, sometimes I think it's better to not know the evil that men do. You can't unsee things once you've seen them. (trial was a brutal murder of a pregnant woman ...by the father of the child. Could've had some interesting implications...but it was also really horrible.)
