OK so how do people deal with incompetent co-workers. I have two of them and while they're funny in a sad kinda way they can also get very frustrating when you have too much of your own work to do.
For instance yesterday one of them somehow lost s shortcut after installing a software update and couldn't figure out how to run the program that the shortcut went to anymore. I had to tell him the full path to the file. Now working at a tech company you'd think he could have used the start menu or at least known about the program files folder on his one. Sheesh.
So, what do you do with people like that? Ignore them? Feign stupidity yourself (Hmmm that's a tricky one...I don't know how to get windows to run a program...I guess you're stuck)? Wait for them to fail on something important and hope that you don't get sucked up into the fallout? Other?

I'm pretty incompetant about things technical myself so I can't really criticize. I tend to let others do their work and do my own myself. Occasionally I have to supervise volunteers and that gets old fast, I feel bad for saying that since patience is usually one of my virtues, but I'm not good at thinking up projects for others to do so I always like it better when someone else has to help them/supervise. My job is helping/talking to the public and so that's what I like doing at work.

I'm a teacher... when that happens I am compelled to get 3x5 cards ( colored naturally) and write them a step by step guide to completing the task.

Every job I've ever worked, I'm the most competent worker in my bosses' eyes, and the least competent to everyone else. (WARNING: This only works if you've read How to Win Friends and Influence People and/or you were born able to win people over naturally)
That plan = good raises, and a minimal raise in blood pressure from co-workers' stupidity.
Just befriend the, otherwise, smartest co-worker that has a ton of drive and ambition that you, (if you're like me), lack and ride their coattails to great pay.

Patiently walk them through it and gently suggest they take notes in case it ever happens again. Go sloooowwwwly.
I hate it when people to whom something is second nature try to "show" you how to do that thing and their hands fly so fast that you can't see what they did or where they clicked and the screens go zipping by and you might as well have been blindfolded, because they are impatient and can't see how anyone could be that slow/stupid that they can't keep up or have to be reminded/shown in the first place.
Just 'cause I'm one of the dummies. I try to remember that when the tables are turned.

Nobody.....NOBODY..... responds well to being treated poorly by their "superiors" at work
My "subordinates" would LOVE me..... (Especially since any superior over my bosses have usually hated me)
If I were his/her "boss", i would lovingly groom him/her to do the job so well that if nobody on top was watching he/she would be doing all of my work for me, and (while not even breaking a sweat doing it), would go home every night feeling the satisfaction of a job well done.
The trick is, to make yourself invaluable in the beginning and then when you see a shift in power (al'la buyout/merger/etc.) make your presence so redundant that you just bought yourself a paid extended vacation.
I'd never do this for a job I actually had passion for, or something that I truly believed in, but when you work as a mindless drone pushing buttons and seeing work come in everyday and night that will never be "finished", where's the satisfaction of a job well done?
I HATE jobs that you can't stand back after a day's work and pat yourself on the back and say "I did that!"
Why do all the high paying jobs I've ever had never give you that satisfaction while many of the low paying jobs I've had do?

The guy (I'm sure) played an intrigal part in my layoff nearly a year and a half ago is married with kids and is underwater on his debt. He's such a chode smoker to his superiors you wouldn't believe he was hetro unless his wife vouched for him. Seriously.....
I'm 32, my house is paid for, my car is paid for, I haven't worked a day for anyone else since early 2010, and in the last month I've easily added 15k to the original purchase price of my house.
Not bad for a 3 time community college drop out, huh?

If I can do it, sure as anyone can, if they have the drive to do it.
Sure... I have family who is "rich" now, making boku bucks a year, but they'll be paying off that house and college long after they've taken out new loans for their kids' college.....
I'll just be the cool uncle who takes them fishing and buys them all silver dollars on their birthday and Christmas like my uncle did.
Why buy the children experience when you can rent it for dirt cheap and not have to clean diapers and wake up at 2AM to a screaming kid?
My bro is awesome and I hope he has 20 kids.
And what you heard, but I'm going to push all of them to get into the trades instead of college.... even the girls.
