How and when did you first discover Firefly?

Same friend that told me about Buffy told me about FIrefly when it was going to be on Sci-fi. I actually didn't listen to him on this one purely because back then I was incredibly busy and all my spare time I had was used up watching Buffy and Angel. I felt I just didn't have the time to watch another show. So I waited.

Then I heard from my friend it had been cancelled. So I figured I'd made the right choice not to get into it. However one day I saw it on DVD and on a whim just thought I'd buy it.

I think I watched it all the way through, stopping very briefly to cook myself some food and walk the dogs.

I was a latecomer to the series, I remember seeing the original promo on Fox, thought "hey, that looks interesting." I was enlisted in the Marines at the time, and didn't have the thought to pay for cable in my barracks room at the time. By the time I actually made an effort to watch it, the show got canceled and I forgot about it over time.

A few years back, I was dating this girl who's younger brother was a devout Browncoat. I came by to the apartment they were sharing and found him him watching S01E13 Heart of Gold. Mesmerized, I sat down and watched it with him and was hooked. I bought the DVDs, discovered BDM a month later and fell even more in love.

As into Sci-Fi as I am, I never got into conventions, Shindigs or the like. Now, I plan on making D*C in 2012 my first experience in full Malcolm Reynolds dress.

I've been with the show from the beginning.

I knew that Joss was doing a new space series, but from the early stuff I read, it seemed a little lame and also seemed like something that would be cancelled. And, I mean, c'mon, who thought the guy could do stuff besides vampires? :)

I remember being at my parents' house watching THE O.C. a few weeks before FIREFLY started (oddly enough, my parents, in their early 50s at the time, were huge fans of THE O.C.) when I saw the first commercials and thought it looked cool enough to give it a try.

I was largely unimpressed through most of THE TRAIN JOB -- it wasn't bad, but I still wasn't sure -- until the end, when Mal kicks the dude into the engine. That's when I was pretty sure it was something special.

Even the following week, I almost didn't stick with the series. At that last minute, I wound up with plans to go out and see a movie (SWEET HOME, ALABAMA, I think), but as I was leaving, I hit record.

By JAYNESTOWN, I was sold -- And I almost missed it, because it aired at 3 or 4 pm on a Saturday afternoon, and I knew only because I friend mentioned it in passing in a conversation earlier in the day. Way to go, FOX!

Fortunately, I had recorded all the episodes (I still have the VHS tapes somewhere), so I was able to watch it again and again, AND rope in a few of my friends, even before the DVDs.

Was bored. Wanted new show. Liked "Buffy" OK. Found Firefly on DVD. Was Joss Whedon. Watched first half of series in one night. Pure endurance kept me from finishing it...until the next night. Found out series was over. Was upset for weeks. Movie came out. Hallelujah.

I agree, Serenity is incredible. I had very high expectations after the series, it met them and then some. I'm glad I watched the series first, as I think it made it more meaningful, and the excitement leading up to it probably also made it more meaningful.

As far as how I discovered Firefly - I was a huge Buffy fan (still am...), and took to Firefly fairly quickly on learning it was created by the same person. I got into Firefly around the time Buffy ended or maybe a little after. I remember looking on the DVD cover and thinking, 'this looks interesting and unique - like Buffy even though it's about something different'. And of course it was. And then I was totally pumped about the movie when I learned there was going to be one - I had hoped it would the next huge science fiction and became excited when the first review at a test screening said 'this is incredible, this going to be the next huge thing in movies'. Kinda disappointing that it wasn't. It doesn't matter though, not really. The quality of the movie totally made up for that not happening. It's amazing that it lived up to my expectations and then some, because in 2005 that was like what that year was about for me, the anticipation of the Serenity movie. Those were good times - well, the Firefly/Serenity part was. It really was an awesome movie and a great series.

Last summer in the school holidays I bought the box set on Amazon in the UK. I felt that when I wasnt a nice middle aged school teacher I could go on an adventure in the verse.
I have watched it several times since.

I lent it to another teacher....now I need it back!

I didn't find it until three years ago, when I had to go through several brain surgeries. I was twelve at the time, and my father (huge browncoat) felt that this was a good time to lighten up my misery, as I was about 5 back in '05. I finished the series quickly and my obsession was quickly transferred from Doctor Who, Sherlock and Supernatural to Firefly. About 36 months, three t-shirts, and one poster later, my love for the show has in no way diminished. Around the same time, I got a tumblr and found awesome Firefly blogs. Now, I'm scouring the message boards for any sort of anything that might be happening within driving distance of Seattle anytime soon.
