Actually, the wax idea might not be so bad. I mean, wouldn't it preserve fairly well, from any more erosion and pollution ?

I find it pathetic and laughable that you'd even attempt to compare the temporary covering of a couple of nondescript statues, during press conferences, to the idea of permanently covering up such iconic architectural monuments of human achievement, such as the Sphinx and the Great Pyramids.
