What's objectionable about The Two Towers?
Yeah I don't think a yearbook should be celebrating teen parenthood exactly. Something just doesn't seem right about that.

Yeah that was my feeling
I love having a senior English class where all the students are over 18. They can sign their own permission slips:)

It's fuzzy-minded liberal thinking like that that gets you eaten.

OK... I think it's nice to embrace those teen mother's who work hard to stay at school & complete their studies, but cutest baby/mother is not something to do with achievement, it reinforces the notion of "beauty" being a way to "fame" or "achievement" & it concerns me that there is a culture where there are enough teen moms to compete in such a competition... definitely not appropriate in my opinion!
Secondly - I would definitely go for it with showing The Two Towers... great choice! I can think of few films which would be open to so much variance in opion about "fairy Tale or not.." & as you say the students are old enough to consent themselves... what are you thinking might cause objection in the film (it's at least 3 years since I last watched it)
Also... I am not getting any sex... 17 months & counting..

Ahh, I miss posting on boards. More than 140 characters and only the folks here see it. Not my Mom. LOL ( Facebook reference. )
I totally agree with Magda about teen moms and babies in the yearbook. Encouraging more of the "see me", "beauty only" culture while in high school just adds to the problem, doesn't encourage a correction of such behaviour. There's got to be a better way to recognize teen moms who stay in school and encourage them to go on with their studies in college. :)
Sex? Is it possible to get enough of that?
I'm interested to hear what could possibly be objectionable in LoTR as well.
I think it's an excellent choice for your assignment. :)

Who's a slacker. I had the last two posts on the last thread.
And it is getting hot and sticky again.

A MSA a chara,
I'm doing allright, thanks for asking. Did you have a nice vacation? I hope you went somewhere nice and had fun.
I didn't know that Imponderables was for opposite sex questions, where do I begin on that one, :)
I guess I thought it was just for you and Zeke since you're the ones I see post here, its sad that were lots of folk and now there are less, but hey we've got a few here now haven't we.
I agree with everyone about the year book, girls do have babies younger than they ought sometimes, but I don't think we need to encourage it, plus you'd be surprised how many silly girls in earlier years at school would look at that and hope to be the one chosen in a few years, sounds silly but some girls are that way. So I'd say leave off on that.
As for The Two Towers, I think that would be a fine thing to show, 17 and 18 year olds are old enough to watch. Now if you had 11 year olds you might have to send home a waver, but these students are grown or nearly grown depending, so it should be fine and lots of them will enjoy it.
Hi Magda, so you used to live in Australia but now you live in England? Do you like the change or do you miss Australia.

Geez Traveler, not sure I want to know the reason for the thread getting hot and sticky AGAIN.

The country is making a big mistake not teaching kids to cook and raise a garden and build fires.

Starting from the top:
MsA -- of course things went silent. We've all been pondering things...(e.g. "I need to get a job..." "Why the gorramn does everyone keep asking me what I like to do? I have no clue...." etc.)
Because FMF said so...I wanna know, who the pukin'ells is trying to send a FORSAKEN to hell? Can we torment the phule into their own living one right now, please?
Magda: favorite words? (for what it means) I like omiyage, nostalgia, and "pay day". For how a word sounds? I'll have to get back to you on that.
MsA: What is this "sex" thing you speak of?
As for the LotR Two Towers -- if they're old enough to sign for themselves, then it should be okay...I don't remember it being overly graphically bloody or anything.
As for the "cutest mother and baby" section in a yearbook? Yes. I think it's tasteless for the reasons previously stated, and sexist since there's nothing for "father and baby" section.

Traveler and NVG: cold showers and frozen ice cubes would probably help you with your problem.

Riona: I'm going to follow "Thumper's mom's rule" right now...I'm pretty sure what was written wasn't meant in the way I read it, so *nods in Riona's direction*
And just so you know -- this place don't revolve around the lot of you....*ebilbratgrin* It revolves around the whims of Wash's dinosaurs...

I don't think I've wandered in here before, mostly because I've been doing my pondering in the pub. (Okay and at my desk in front of books I'm supposed to be reading..)
@Riona: So bring a friend or thirty! This seems like a very welcoming place!
MsA: I think LOTR- yes, "cutest"- no.
There is nothing objectionable in LOTR other than some violence and elf-on-dwarf-on-Hobbit action (oh wait, that was the slashfic) 'scuse me: elf-on-human steaminess.
Of course you could end up with parents screaming "satanic film with devils" which would make for a lot of kids trying to transfer into your class.
"Cutest" not only leaves room for highly biased interpretation, but is also like saying "you fucked up, well done!" and might backfire completely if they're trying to turn it into a "wall of shame". (Which would also be inappropriate.) How about all the new moms get a page headed "Determined to finish school"? Or if there's any of them who are college bound "Determined to succeed" or "Most likely to NOT be on Public assistance in 5 years"? Good for them that they're not dropping out, but let's not turn it into something to shoot for.
I understand that there are ethnicities in the US who view being a mother by the time you're 18 almost mandatory, and I do not want to slam on someone's tradition and outlook but it really doesn't work as well here as it does back in the old country.
Wow, I got all long winded on that one didn't I? Hazards of the job. Which I'm not doing. Okay, hazards of being a pompous gasbag.

Yeah I just felt that in an inner city high school with an uber high drop out rate and 100% of the students below the poverty line, it wasn't really the best idea to celebrate teen pregnancy, but I was outvoted...sigh
OK so next ponder- would you think it increased or decreased the attractiveness of a woman if she had fake boobs??
I ask because when I have my reduction ( I have really really really big boobs) I am reducing them so far they will have to be fake... so weird or not weird?
Riona- actually I'm glad you said something ... it made me realize how far we've dropped. I'm trying to get everyone back in here. I guess I'm especially protective of this thread because it's how I met my wonderful husband ( nvghostrider)
