I was thinking the other day about the Oscars being applied to Firefly episodes and whether it could work or not. I had to tweak the categories slightly so that Best Picture becomes best episode etc, but on the whole it sort of works. Also I had to add one:
BEST STUNT - as I've always felt this is an inexcusable oversight on the academy's part.
So here we go.

ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE Morena Baccarin
ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE Christina Hendriks - Saffron

Hey SCBROWNCOAT.
Nice addition with the quote. I like it.
BEST QUOTE for me would be:
Mal: No, they don't. Men of God make everyone feel guilty and judged.

Haha! I quote this show/movie way too many times in my "real" life so I just had to add it. :)

Man, it's hard to pick favorites, even with so many categories! This is one of those series that I love everything about. Here's a reasonable approximation, though, complete with commentary:
BEST EPISODE: Serenity—edging out over the competition by ONE VOTE! Runners-up included Out of Gas and Ariel, along with Jaynestown, which tied with Our Mrs. Reynolds for third place...
BEST ACTOR IN A LEADING ROLE: Sean Maher as Simon. A close call between him, Nathan Fillion and Adam Baldwin, as all three handle both comedy and drama very convincingly, but it came down to preference. :)
BEST ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE: Jonathan Woodward as Tracey. Tracey really stood out to me, even among the other great guest stars.
ACTRESS IN A LEADING ROLE: Summer Glau as River. Summer is just a phenomenal actress. (Can you tell that I like Simon and River?)
ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE: Christina Hendriks as Saffron. No contest.
ART DIRECTION (which I had to google): Jaynestown
CINEMATOGRAPHY (which I also had to google): Out of Gas
COSTUME DESIGN: Shindig—no, Heart of Gold—no! Wait. Our Mrs. Reynolds? ...No. No, it's the Train Job, for sure. Yup, definitely Our Shindig Job of Gold. By which I mean Shindig.
DIRECTING: Objects in Space. I don't know how much of what we see is "good directing" and how much is good scriptwriting, editing and/or just great acting, but I do know that Objects In Space had some spot-on characterization.
EDITING: Out Of Gas. The best-constructed episode of the series, in my opinion.
MAKE-UP: War Stories... obviously. For the rippled barbarian dudes.
BEST MUSIC: Jaynestown of course. "The Hero of Canton, the man they call Jayne~!"
SOUND EDITING: Hm, I don't know.
SPECIAL EFFECTS: Ariel? That's the only one I can think of with more CG than usual.
WRITING: Serenity
BEST STUNT: Serenity; the horse falling on Patience. I admire the skill it must've taken to pull that off.
And as for best quote? For the moment, at least? Simon's entire monologue in Serenity. It is one of my very most favorite things in the history of... things. That I like.
"There was a... a school... a, uh, a government-sponsored academy, we had never even heard of it, but it had the most exciting program, the most challenging. We could have sent her anywhere, we had the money, but... she wanted to go. She wanted to learn. She was... fourteen."

Cool idea and it does work well. I guess it could also be expanded to the larger work of the Whedonverse or even the entire work of our BDH's.
But being my picky self shouldn't the actor/actress categories also have an episode listed with them just like movies are listed with them at the Oscars?
Plus I'm counting the movie as an episode.

Woah! Y'know when you see it written like that, you're absolutely right. Those are good words made whole by Sean's brilliant acting. Spot on!

BEST EDITING: Even though everyone's inclined to go with Out of Gas, which is beautifully *sequenced* series of scenes-- I'm not sure I'd go with it as best *edited*. I don't have experience with video editing, but I know from experience editing audio that the best edits are the ones that you can't tell are there. Bad edits you can spot (or hear) easily. Good edits are where you can't tell if it was done in a single take or edited all to hell and back. I'm also sure that in video as in music, some kinds of edits are just more challenging to do well than others. Some editing situations are just way more exposed than others, and the errors stand out. To do a fully exposed edit well and smoothly is more challenging than editing in a well-covered situation, and merits the prize.
