Um. There is atmosphere on Mars. It's mostly carbon dioxide, so it's just not human breathable air.

But then, that's how the Earth way back when was according to the geological stratum, so.

If there were no air, you'd be right, parachutes wouldn't work and instead to slow down they'd have to try to position themselves and fire some rockets, difficult since I'm pretty sure they use all their fuel getting there.

Mars' atmosphere is less than 1% as thick as Earth's, which is not enough CO2 "air" on Mars to slow a parachute, which may be why so many landers crashed officially (or do you really think NASA can't tell the difference between US and Metric?).

You should know that density is different then pressure, and that even with a less dense atmosphere a parachute would just need to be larger.
