I am considering joining the Navy, mostly as a way to get my student loans paid off and get experience in my chosen field (accounting). Recruiters make it sound all grand and shiny, but experience says life is rarely all that. So I want a balanced opinion. If you are in the Navy, especially if you are a woman (but I will take guy's observations/opinions too)...How was the experience? mostly good, mostly bad? Any tips on what specifics to ask a recruiter or require in writing? What should I be aware of going in that maybe they don't tell you or you just didn't know/think to ask?

Not in the Navy, but I do have one piece of advice for you:
When you join, you are signing a contract. Make absolutely certain you understand ALL of the terms of that contract, including what you and the Navy MUST do versus what you and they CAN do but don't HAVE TO do, *especially* regarding getting an assignment in your chosen field. (What happens if they have more accountants than they need? What assignment would you get in that case?)
Joining the military can be a noble thing ... but it's also a legal thing, so make sure you know what you're legally agreeing to do.

We have two in the Houston crew - one male, one female, both are out now. I will try to get them to respond to you :)
