Bush was the biggest Mistake Americans ever made. He is a failure and thats why this country is the most hated in the world and worst off. We have built so much and are letting it all get destroyed at this point. We would rather spend money killing people then saving lives, and improving technology for our future interest.

That's an ignorant statement. I'll leave it at that since I'd rather this thread try to stay on topic. :)

Ending the shuttle program wouldn't be so bad if there was a replacement ready for lift-off, privatized or not. The problem is that all of the ideas for new spacecraft are still blueprints or in early test stages. That leaves a huge gap in time between the end of the NASA shuttle program and whatever comes next; time that's wasted. In the gap, we'll be relying on other countries to take command of space entry. Now, it's nice that planet Earth can still make it to space, but it sucks that it won't be America. After all, we used to be so gung-ho about Space, the Final Frontier. It seems that, in these economic times, allowing the shuttle program to end without a replacement is a viable option. I don't believe that. I believe that if the government really tried, if they really wanted to, they could have found some sort of budget to at least fund development for the next big thing. Or to fly a shuttle a couple more times. Something. Anything to keep space exploration alive. For example, they could have cut funding to the healthy school foods program since most schools can't afford fresh fruit and vegetables every day to be sauteed or stir-fried or whatever. Just give them a sandwich and plenty of exercise instead of tv and internet. But I digress. If the government still wanted Space to be on the agenda, it would be. It's sad how many people will be out of work because of it; intelligent, brilliant people that studied for years to learn something so innovative and daring as to venture into space. It's also sad how few people understand the ramifications of the program ending. The development of new technology will be stifled and innovation of current technology will slow.

Anywho, I'm beginning to ramble and should really get to bed now. I feel very strongly about space exploration and it saddens me immensely to see this day come without anything to replace the program.

Yes, go to sleep. But when you wake, know that it was 7½ years ago that Bush decided to shutdown the shuttle. The most recent 2½ years of Obama could not possibly undo the mistakes of the previous 5 years of Bush, no matter how much you want it. And "really trying, if they really wanted to" is childish thinking. The Republicans wouldn't allow it.

By the way, shuttle flew 3 times in 2011. Bush wanted it shut down in 2010, so JenJen has already got the wish of extra flights that weren't going to happen if Bush had it all his way. STS-133 in February, scrubbed from 2010 because of a leaky tank, STS-134 in May, STS-135 in July.

WASHINGTON, Jan. 14, 2004 — President Bush proposed on Wednesday to develop a new spacecraft to carry Americans back to the moon as early as 2015, and to establish a long-term base there as an eventual springboard to Mars and beyond. He spelled out the financial details only through December 2008, and said NASA would receive just $1 billion in new money over that time. Bush would also shift $11 billion in federal money from other NASA programs over that same time frame to make way for the program. [That $11 billion shift? It never happened.] Under Bush's plan, the space shuttle fleet would be retired in 2010. - www.msnbc.msn.com/id/3950099/ns/technology_and_science-space/t/bush-se

Jen, that's all what my dad says and I think he's got some really good points, thus I think you've got some really good points.

Two, its not that I'm actually interested in having a US/Cino Alliance, I only mentioned that because of the television show that we all hold so near and dear and which this site is about. Most of the charactors in it have American accents and speak Mandarin on the side, so I assume that the original Alliance was between the US (or possibly Canada) and China. that's the only reason I said it.

RionaEire, you're making peace too quickly. It was never about Firefly and the Chinese. It's about fatcat Hal Rogers, Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, being in charge of the money for NASA. http://halrogers.house.gov/

The Republican Hal Rogers would forbid NASA from talking to any Commies, anywhere, anytime. It's too late for Rogers to forbid talking to Russians because NASA astronauts are already riding into orbit on the Soyuz, but it is not too late for him to forbid NASA talking with the Chinese Commies. And that is why the small-minded Republican has a general provision prohibiting NASA or the Office of Science and Technology Policy from engaging in bilateral activities with China unless authorized by Hal Rogers. http://appropriations.house.gov/News/DocumentSingle.aspx?DocumentID=25
0023

It is wrong that Rogers, who brags about being a hillbilly born in rural Kentucky and representing the poorest Congressional District in the nation, is applying his quirky prejudices to NASA. He hates all foreigners, but he really hates Chinese Commies. Now that he is a powerful man, he's going to do something about it. Look out NASA, because here comes Hal Rogers to kick your ass and cut your budget.

Hal Rogers is on the list of the Most Corrupt Members of Congress. - http://richmondregister.com/localnews/x155232819/McConnell-Rogers-on-M
ost-Corrupt-list
He tells voters that he is proud to be on the list because it means he is doing his job right. He even had the Daniel Boone Parkway renamed after himself. That is man with a ton of self-regard for his own importance and accomplishments.

Bloviating blowhard Hal Rogers oversees NASA's budget.

Two, I guess I didn't make myself understood. I'm not in any hurry to cozy up with China in space, I only mentioned China because of Firefly.

Why be cozy with China? They don't have much to offer the US Space Program now, unlike the Russians who have plenty. But in 25 years the situation will change and the Chinese space program could be radically better.

Republican Hal Rogers is not waiting 25 years. He wants the law set in concrete that NASA shall never cooperate with the Chinese like it did with the Russians for the ISS. (AFAIK, Republicans instinctively hate all Communists. Hal Rogers is displaying that same peculiar anti-commie twitch. He should have a doctor look at it.)

I don't mind cooperating in space, as long as we have our own stuff too.
