THE widow of a hero soldier blown up in Afghanistan hit out yesterday at military chiefs who ban troops from shooting Taliban they spot planting mines.
Angry Wendy Rayner, 40, told an inquest that Sergeant Peter Rayner watched helplessly as insurgents laid killer devices unchallenged.
She said her husband, 34, told senior officers of the danger but his warnings were "laughed off".
Four days later the dad of one was killed when one of the mines went off as his patrol escorted a bomb disposal team.
Wendy called on the Government to change rules of engagement which she says force our soldiers to treat the Taliban with kid gloves by not shooting first.
She said: "They are not allowed to fire on these terrorists, who are allowed to get away with murder.
"Let our soldiers be soldiers. We have lost too many men out there."
She went on: "Peter was concerned about the number of explosive devices being planted in the area they were patrolling and had told higher ranks because he feared one of them would be killed.
"He said they could see people planting these devices but could do nothing about it. They could not open fire or make contact with them.
"They laughed it off and said, 'You will do as you are told'.
"I believe that if people had taken on board what Peter was saying, if he had been shown more respect as a sergeant, he might be alive."
Mrs Rayner spoke out before a coroner recorded an unlawful killing verdict on her husband, a soldier since he was 17.
She said Peter, of 2nd Battalion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment, phoned her shortly before he was killed and was "highly stressed" as he told of his concerns. He had watched Taliban bomb layers at work through night-vision glasses in Nahr-e-Saraj, Helmand, last October.
He then suffered fatal head injuries in a blast as he led ten men in single file down a track.
After the Bradford inquest, Wendy added: "The patrol area was filled with IEDS (mines).
"They had already had a couple killed.
"But the lads are not allowed to fire unless they are fired upon themselves. The Taliban can shoot first but our lads can't. I am really annoyed. Peter was just trying to protect his men but got himself killed."
Wendy, of Bradford, and Peter had been married 12 years. They have a son Derek, eight.
After his death Peter's CO called him "a lion".
His father Pete, 60, himself a soldier for 23 years, was at the inquest with Peter's mum Bernadette.
He said: "I don't believe my son was taken seriously because he was an NCO, not an officer."
An MoD spokesman said: "IEDs are taken very seriously. But troops are required to exercise restraint as the use of deadly force is not always appropriate.
"Innocent civilians may be in the vicinity."

Here one Murdoch insider, whose identity is known by The Mail on Sunday but who has been guaranteed anonymity, describes what it is like working for Mrs Brooks...
The integrity of The Sun and the News of the World started crumbling the moment Rebekah Brooks got her hands on them.
She had the same, craven relationship with public relations practitioners. Scores, if not hundreds, of front-page stories were written by the PR men. They would think up a headline and story and The Sun and News of the World would run it, word for word. Some of them were complete fiction.
Meanwhile, proper stories by proper journalists were buried deep inside the paper. Stories that upset one of Rebekah’s VIP cronies didn’t appear at all. It broke the reporters’ hearts.

Relationships with PR firms such as Matthew Freud’s Freud Communications were so close that if they called the newsdesk with a story, you had to run it. If you told them it wasn’t a story but just a piece of PR fluff, they would phone Rebekah’s office, the reporter would be told off and the story would go in as Freud wanted it.
I have never seen a woman so driven by ambition and yet so lacking talent. What she does have – in abundance – is an ability to get what she wants. Mainly from men. And they would do whatever it took to please her – including phone hacking.
Occasionally she would come back from No 10 with an ‘exclusive’ story. But usually, they weren’t real exclusives: the story had been agreed in advance and generally showed the PM or the governing party in a favourable light. A Sun or News of the World exclusive in the old days would have terrified No 10.
And no one was better at handling Rupert Murdoch than Rebekah. When she was with him, she would do everything for him. She would make sure his glass was topped up, grab the right people at receptions for him, keep those who he didn’t want to see out of reach, open doors for him. Everything.
That is why he has gone to such inordinate lengths to protect her. Some would say him prioritising saving her as opposed to the News of the World is insanity.
She is like a daughter to him. And as he has grown older and more frail, he has become closer to and more dependent on her.
People constantly ask: ‘Why hasn’t Murdoch been tougher on Rebekah?’ The answer is not as complex as it may appear. As the saying goes, there’s no fool like an old fool.

The former prime minister Gordon Brown has condemned "the most disgusting work" of News International journalists for using known criminals to invade the privacy and feelings of ordinary people, and accused the company of abusing its power for political gain.
Brown was reacting to revelations that News International journalists had attempted to access his voicemail and had obtained information from his bank account, his legal file and his family's medical records.
"I'm genuinely shocked to find that this happened. If I – with all the protection and all the defences that a chancellor or a prime minister has – can be so vulnerable to unscrupulous and unlawful tactics, what about the ordinary citizen?
"I find it quite incredible that a supposedly reputable organisation makes its money at the expense of ordinary people."
In an interview with the BBC and the Guardian, Brown confirmed that shortly after the birth of his son Fraser in October 2006, Rebekah Brooks, then editor of the Sun, telephoned his wife Sarah to say the paper had obtained details from the boy's medical records, revealing that he was suspected to be suffering from cystic fibrosis.
Brown said he had never wanted his children's lives to be the subject of publicity. "I have never talked publicly about Fraser's condition. Obviously we wanted to keep that private. As a parent, you want to do your best by your children."
Asked how he and his wife had reacted to the call, he said: "In tears. Your son is going to be broadcast across the media. Sarah and I were incredibly upset."
Brown said he had no idea how the Sun had obtained the information and questioned the paper's claim last night that this had been done legitimately.
"They will have to explain themselves. I can't think of any way that the medical condition of a child can be put into the public domain legitimately unless the doctor makes a public statement or the family make a statement.
"I don't know how it appeared. The fact is that it did appear. It appeared in the Sun."
He said he had known at the time that his bank account had been penetrated by the Sunday Times but had not understood that News International had relied on the help of criminals.
"I had my bank account broken into. I had my legal files effectively broken into. My tax returns went missing at one point. Medical records were broken into. I don't know how this happened.
"I do know that in two instances there is absolute proof that News International hired people to do this and the people who are doing this are criminals, known criminals in some cases with records of violence and fraud."

Of course it hasn't happened to Murdoch; he wouldn't allow it! He's at the base of all this shit; the guy in charge sets the tone and morality, and everyone else follows. Was talking about this to hubby and he passed it off, saying "nothing will change". Probably not; me, I'm having dreams of Murdoch and his whole empire being brought down...between him and the Koches, America is changing for the worse steadily...
