My take:
Serenity flying through space, an Alliance cruiser in her flightpath. Camera zooms in on bridge, goes through the window and stops on "the red button". Wash hits it, alarms go off. Camera travels through the ship, showing the BDHs getting ready for inspection, River and Simon crawling into hiding in the secret compartment.

more from the battle of Serenity, and more on the life for the independants before the Alliance destroyed them as a force at Serenity

Our BDHs on a typical rim world rounding up work. They walk down a dusty street past Mr Sonny Rhodes, who is sitting on a porch strumming a guitar & singing the Ballad of Serenity.

Credits?

I'm a traditionalist.

Or anyway. I'd start with a crime, a sort of scary one where they might have to menace people a bit, they do their crime thing and we gradually realize these our the heroes. (We already know, but the general audience don't)

Or maybe a slow sequence through the interior of the ship, getting each character in a tiny bit of detail and then ......

Something happens. Something exciting.
I'd suggest explosions, multiple, cold and domestic.

Yeah, the very first scene could be the next installment of "Alan Tudyk presents: This Land" We start tight on a plastic T-Rex.

Something family like... with everybody together, playing or eating or shooting or whatever. And I wish there will be a way to put the theme song into the movie.

You know, I really don't have a clear image of what I'd like the first scene to be. Joss has so much exposition to accomplish in a short time that it all becomes a bit of a jumble in my head (which is why I'm surpassingly glad that it's Joss writing it and not me!). I'll trust in Joss to make things unfold as they must.

That said, it's funny you should mention that long travelling shot, as this is something I've envisioned my own self many a time. I imagine the silence of the Black (well, maybe some pretty, wispy nebula-type-stuff), a plaintive guitar-and-fiddle cue, and Serenity heaving into view from screen top, descending into our field of view, coming right at us. Smoothly, the motion continues, right through the front viewports (cue sound as we pass glass), blending seamlessly into a long travelling shot through the bridge, the foredeck, and into the mess hall, where our BDHs await us. It would be a lovely shot, which we definitely have the tech to accomplish, would introduce new viewers to the layout of the ship, and serve as a love letter to the fans.

255 days to go.......

I'm thinkin' Joss is gonna try to trick us, like showin' us River running through the ship and killing everyone, only to find out Simon is dreaming about it or something like that.

That, or Jayne slitting Buffy's throat. That'd be good. No good little...

Explosions and nudity, in no particular order.

Two things the opening has to do -

1) Tell people that this ain't Star Wars or Star Trek.

2) Throw people into the action.

I'm thinking a heist scene on a planet, flowing quickly to Serenity, which takes off just in time and jumps to.. credits.

A showdown scene with river and two of the blue sun people with the rest of the crew backing her up.

But it will probably open in a heist of some sort.

Course he could always tarentino it and show the ending then film and show how they got to that point.
