I watched, and had a good sniffle over the whole situation. Didn't have to go downstairs to fire up the TV - - just smacked the alarm clock and hit switches on this little thing on my desk.

I was raised on the sort of sci-fi in which a guy scrapes his last few credits together, picks up a jalopy rocket off a junk pile and takes off for Alpha Whozit for whatever reason makes a good story.

Sound familiar? I really thought that was where we were headed, eventually, and maybe in my lifetime, given the rapid progress we were making in just about every other field of endeavor.

So yesterday morning I tickled the ivories - - well, black plastic - - and used this thing, capacity nearly undreamed of thirty years ago - - to watch in perfect fidelity as the resource-hungry, cumbersome, tetchy, thirty-year-old lump of technology was shoved for the last time out of our gravitational field and into The Black.

Congratulations to all who worked on it, and to all who sail in her, but when? when? when?

After talking to my dad about it, who is really angry about the whole thing ending, I saw it on the news and did have a little cry over it. Somehow talking to him made me realize how bad of an idea this really is. Its going to be the Russian/Cino Alliance ruling the verse instead of the US/Cino Alliance. :(

There are more bad ideas to get angry about: Republicans intend to cancel the James Webb Space Telescope, the successor to the Hubble. The same bill that kills the Webb Space Telescope includes a general provision prohibiting NASA or the Office of Science and Technology Policy from engaging in bilateral activities with China unless authorized by the Republican controlled Congress.
