Former News of the World editor Andy Coulson has been arrested for questioning after Scotland Yard concerns over phone hacking allegations and payments to police officers, Sky News reports.

The tabloid boss, 43, who has more recently worked as press chief for British Prime Minister David Cameron until his resignation in January, is believed to have attended a central London police station on Friday morning where he was officially taken into custody.

Coulson was at the helm of the top-selling News International publication between 2003 and 2007 during which time the Sunday paper has been linked to a phone hacking scandal involving up to 4,000 people.

"The MPS (Metropolitan Police Service) has this morning arrested a member of the public in connection with allegations of corruption and phone hacking," Scotland Yard said in a statement distributed on Friday.

Coulson was not named by police, but Sky News said he was the 43-year-old mentioned.

"The man, aged 43 years, was arrested by appointment at a south London police station. He is currently in custody," the statement continued.

Coulson was employed by Cameron as director of communications in 2007 following the former's resignation as editor at the News of the World.

In a press conference on Friday, Cameron said at the time he appointed Coulson, the former tabloid chief gave assurances he was not linked to alleged wrongdoing at the top-selling Sunday newspaper.

However the prime minister went on to say that the allegations ultimately led to Coulson's departure from his office.

"I decided to give him a second chance and no one has ever raised serious concerns about how he did his job for me," Cameron said. "But the second chance didn't work out and he had to resign all over again."

Coulson, with whom Cameron admitted he became friends, is expected to be released on bail after questioning.

I agree, this won't touch Murdoch financially. I also doubt it will do all they're saying/writing to his "reputation". Does he have one? I mean a good one? Aside from the righties who swallow his people's bile whole cloth, most people seem to abhor him.

Murdoch Jr. going to jail? Now THAT might have an impact, if it actually happens, which I kinda doubt, given the clout Daddy wields. Not sure even the judicial system is free from his interference. We'll see, but I'd LOVE that. Word is Daddy, being 80, is thinking of stepping down and passing the empire down to Jr. If he's in jail ( ), that would be difficult. Daddy would probably have to go on working into his eighties. Awwwww. The fact that he brought Jr. over to New York before all this broke was assumed to be a move to try and keep him out of the fray; I'm tickled it didn't work!

Okay, Mike, NOW I see gain for Murdoch to have faked the hacking. Seems pretty silly, but maybe to make it look like they're victims, too, or something? Dunno, but the timing makes it questionable.

Geezer, I'm afraid my sympathy for the people at NOW is limited. They've been doing sleaze for a looong time now; they knew what they were doing. I do sympathize to a point, but only to a point.

Wow, Magons, sounds like he's even more reviled Down Under than he is here! Unfortuantely, we're populated with far too many ignorant righties who live and breathe whatever he and his news empire say, so he's got pretty strong clout over here, too. Tho' I do have to point out that, while I don't know how it is there, Britain apparently takes its tabloids more seriously than we do, and they're more sleazy than ours (if that's possible!). Over here they are jokes to many people (not enough, unfortunately), and from what I hear, not NEARLY as awful as in Britain.

Uh, I also read that he may have wanted to dump NOW for a while now anyway and this was just the perfect excuse. "the demise of the News of the World would ultimately benefit News International's bottom line." Who knows?

Gawd, I would just adore it, even if it only meant Murdoch's power and control of the media were lessened in any way. He's the scariest person on earth, to me, given how MUCH control he has over global media, his obvious ideology and his willingness to use his power and money to influence counries' governments! Anything that minimizes that influence in any way would be a blessing. That it will actually bring him down? Nah, not a chance.

Hey, where are Rappy and his buddies, rushing in to defend Murdoch and claiming the whole thing is a vast liberal conspiracy? They're awfully quiet...

He truly is a kingmaker, Niki, particularly in the UK and here. His papers and his media empire form, not reflect public opinion and his editorials (not written by him personally) win or lose elections. He wields far, far too much power.

The only reason we don't have all our media owned by him is there is still some sorry arse mechanisms in place to prevent total monopolies. So much for laissez faire policies, if there were no regulations he'd own the lot, that includes America as well.
