Um... Take any reports from Detroit with a grain of salt. It's a proud city, but parts of it are more like the Gaza strip with gunfire instead of IEDs. Kids in the really bad areas are assumed criminal, and so either thrown in jail as a matter of course or locked up in the maximum security... schooling system.

They're not going to be able to learn much while essentially at gun point. Also, we're probably not looking at a Jayne Cobb demographic here. We're looking at inner city kids living in extreme urban decay. Also watch out for the hefty dose of racism from the normally white city officials.

Haven't heard as much about Houston politics, so that might be legitimate. Looking at a quick comparison of literacy by city, several Texas cities are in the bottom ten.

But the national trend for literacy appears to be upward.

Sometimes it does feel like people, particularly kids, are getting stupider, they all right in text speak, none of them have an attention span because they're so used to gadgets that are constantly showing different things, constant videogame use, instant gratification, multitasking. I'm someone who thinks that maybe too much multitasking might be bad for our brains/development, now there's a conspiracy theory worth looking at, any thoughts?

My mom told my little brother about Bin Laden so he would know what was going on, it happened six months before he was born.

Using that 49.6% rate gives the USA 150,000,000 Jane and Jayne Cobbs. The more you look, the worse it seems - perhaps half the USA knows not who Osama is. And feel no need to know.

Sorry, gotta shoot a skeet here: Gaza aint so bad. Its not really a terrorist ridden third world pile of rubble, and unlike detroit, almost everyone can read.

Part of my feelings about Gaza come from here: if it were myhome, i wouldnt want to give it up. Detroit is more like Ciudada Juarez headed towards being Basra.

Some nice real estate in detroit though.

Did i mention that this thread belongs in RWED? Thats why Frem hasnt weighed in i guess, but I'm definitely going to get out of the way on this one as it has to do with kids being dumb AND the degeneration of detroit?!? I think he'll go nuclear when he sees it.

Well regardless of the reportedly fake screenshot, I just went and typed 'who is' into Google and the third option was 'who is Osama Bin Laden' so there's obviously some truth. Pretty sad.

Won't these people get a shock when they arrive in New York to find the twin towers have mysteriously disappeared.

Sorry, i search twitter for "who is osama" the only constant string in this screenshot, so clearly the poster's search. I could not get anything but references to the story. The only posts i could find of this nature were the ones posted, and they were non-consecutive and you can only find them by searching on these people's usernames, which was nice of him not to block out.

When you review the posterrs you realize that some of them were likely born after bin laden waswidely reported to have died in 2001, and are not americans, so they live in a world where his death was a fact. Who today talks about Zarqawi? No one talks about dead terrorists. Esp. Not to eight year olds. In greece. Considering the goal here was to prove people are dumb, And they have 200 million twitter accounts to draw from, and they searched on deliberately things, this is a pretty poor showing to support the argument,

Just scan through pages and stick 'em together. Osama was hardly an important person to most of the world, just to US politicians and reporters, and maybe some islamic radicals, depending on how much of the story we buy.

Desaismike: Just because I don't know who is Kate Middleton doesn't make me dumb. If it does, then I feel sorry for the rest of the world.

Well considering that PN's 'source' for the picture was his favourite Daily Mail newspaper, here in the UK, then it's hardly surprising that it's fake or at least presented to show what they want. They see doom and gloom in everything. I'd call them 'alarmist'. If someone catches a bad cold in one part of the country then we are all going to die from a new strain of the flu virus. Apparently our next door neighbours could be terrorists so according to the Mail they all are terrorists.
The columists are usually spouting their own thoughts so much that it can be difficult to find any real news in the articles.
