I watched "Paul" today. Written by, and starring Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost(Shaun of the Dead, Spaced).
Pretty good. The film takes takes a serious stand against Christianity, and religion, but overall just a goofy movie with a lot of "in" jokes relating to the world of science fiction.

It was a mock trailer within Grindhouse for a mock film called Machette. As it happened there was a sort of 'cult' interest in the premise of Machette and so Rodriguez went and made the film.
Snake works well as an anti hero. But I must admit Burton made more of an impression on me. I tend to find myself saying:
"Son of a bitch must pay." and "We really shook the pillars of heaven." quite a lot.

Adjustment Bureau - interesting story idea with typical hollywood trainwreck, if you can filter that out, you'll do fine.
Bugs Life - pretty awesome throughout. Decent metaphor
Dark Crystal - Awesome puppets, nice story arc, got too carried away with that to write dialogue, etc.
Sucker Punch - Trainwreck on steroids. Nothing worked. If you like videogame++ effects and sexy schoolgirls kicking ass, you'll do fine. If you're looking for something else, you'll fall short. My expectations were real low, and I thought it was kinda fun.
That's what a ship is, you know - it's not just a keel and a hull and a deck and sails, that's what a ship needs.

The Yearling: Read the book in high school and saw the movie around that time too, but watched it again on Fri. night. Its a story about the loss of innocence, not just the first event that precipitates this loss, but the process and then the final event that puts the nail in its coffin for the main charactor. I identify with the process and the pain because my own loss of innocence, starting at 12 and finishing at 14 was painful to. (note that I'm not using that phrase to refer to sex in any way shape or form, I refer to the process that all children go through, or nearly all anyways)
Robin Hood Men in Tights: I love this movie! So funny, it never gets old for me, I laugh myself silly everytime.
The Scout: I'm not sure what this movie was trying to say. There were a few things it could have said, about touched folk and talents and celebrating people's abilities etc. But it didn't say any of those things, it was really quite flat and rather disappointing, when it ended I was like "... okay, what is the movie saying or conveying here?"

The Expendables
good: Cordy! Well, Charisma I mean. She looked awesome. Great to see her on a bigger screen, and a bigger part. More of her ain't a bad thing.
bad: Pretty much the entire rest of the movie. It was like 1/2 a script. I'm sure they INTENDED to have characters anyone cared about, and some sort of backstory which tied all thses mercs together....but I just wasn't feelin' it.
Stallone and Rourke look like freaks. Sad, really. Arnold looks old - OLD. Statham and Li... I liked. Oh, and Willis was decent. I suppose.
Lots of silly stuff in the movie, as in pointless.

Why a gun mount on the nose of a plane, where you have to stick your head OUT of the plane to fire ? what the hell?
Not a major point of the movie, but just nonsensical.

The Fighter. Oscar-worthy performances all around, really. Christian Bale was so freaking good in this movie, and that's sad, because his character was a wreck, and he looked horrible.
The Town. Loved it. I got the impression that Ben Affleck liked "Heat", but hated the ending, so decided to do his own version, with Southies.
It's Kind of a Funny Story. Odd movie, not as funny as I expected (Zack Galifianakis co-stars), quirky, but good. I enjoyed it.
Stone. With Deniro and Edward Norton headlining, it's strange to say this, but Milla Jovovich absolutely stole the show in this one. She just flat out-acted the others. Another very odd movie, not what one would expect, and

The Last of the Mohecans: This was good, made back in the late 80s or early 90s, the music was really good, the story was enjoyable to watch, I enjoy stories that revolve around the concept of "watives" (people of European extraction being raised as Indians during early settlement days) and I thought Daniel Day Lewis's charactor was really attractive, mmmm.
Avenging Angelo: Another movie with Madelein Stowe, purely coincidental. Unbenonced to her her bio dad was a mob boss who just died and Sylvester Stalone has to be her body guard. Cute, had some funny lines, like how she calls getting whacked getting "waxed".
A Flash of Rainbows: A sad movie but had a really good little actor in it. Takes place in Ireland which is why we rented it. Not brilliant by any means, very sad, but worth seeing once and had cute seals in it, as all films about little Irish islands should.

Truthfully though, she's rather skinny about now. I thought Michelle Rodriguez was stealing her hotness in that particular flick!

Submarine
A coming of age story, set in Wales during the mid-80s.
Wait! Come back! It's written and directed by Richard Ayoade (Mos from The IT Crowd), the leading young actor is terrific, his object of desire is the lovely Yasmin Paige (Maria Jackson from The Sarah Jane Adventures, not that I recognised her) and it deals with first love in a way that will have you laughing while simultaneously wincing as you recall your own troubles from that age.
I doubt many will get the chance to see it at the cinema (it's pretty limited release even in the UK) but catch it on Blu-ray when you can.

I just saw a movie on DVD called "Cairo Time" with Patricia Clarkson and Alexander Siddig (from Deep Space Nine).
It is a lovely romance about the wife of a UN official who falls for his Egyptian friend who shows her around Cairo.
Sid is just getting better and better looking with age, and it is so nice to see him play a part where his character doesn't get blown up at the end of the movie. ('Cause don't we all take nitro glycerine with us when we go hiking!)
