I hear there's no water left in the # 2 (?) reactor, and that if they don't get the power wired up to the cooling systems.....well.
As to the spike and drop in radiation....what's that about ?

Fail. Just, fail. Not only do you blow up the containment, but this will take out the other reactors too. We're not even talking about radiation along the lines of an atomic bomb or Chernobyl anymore. We're talking about six or more Chernobyls.

The instruments I can only assume are inside the power plants. The spikes are associated with hydrogen explosions as the zirconium casing for the rods melted off, leaving the rods bare to each other.
The explosions then released radiation into the environment, which is the only reason I can think of why the readings would drop down again. So far, it's done this without fully breaching containment as far as I know, which is why the whole reactor cores aren't exposed yet (which would result in all the water flash vaporizing and kaboom and much more radiation which will not go away).

Operation to use helicopters to dump seawater into the reactors are underway. Due to radioactivity levels, the helicopters can't hover and can't fly very low. Most of the water is being dispersed rather than hitting the intended targets.

1 sieverts = 100 rems. 12,000 would be 120 rems.
Here is the effects it'll have on the body in rems.
5-20 Possible late effects; possible chromosomal damage.
20-100 Temporary reduction in white blood cells.
100-200 Mild radiation sickness within a few hours: vomiting, diarrhea, fatigue; reduction in resistance to infection.
200-300 Serious radiation sickness effects as in 100-200 rem and hemorrhage; exposure is a Lethal Dose to 10-35% of the population after 30 days (LD 10-35/30).

120 rem seems right, considering accounts of most people potentially exposed doing all right so far, but with some scattered cases of sickness. That is assuming they're not hiding the truly sick.
That's bound to get higher in the near-ish future.
