Thanks to everyone for posting info about the nuclear situation in Japan. I agree with Byte that it is physically possible for us to get radiation if something goes wrong, but I don't think we need to be too concerned yet. I think people are doing their best to take care of the situation over there, hopefully it will get resolved as soon as possible.

Prime Minister of Japan has asked for calmness while telling people that they should all evacuate further out from the nuclear power plants and stay in their homes.

Additionally, there is now a fire with reactor number 4, which contains spent nuclear material and might be burning.

Furthermore, the containment unit for reactor 2 has been confirmed damaged and possibly might be leaking.

Personnel will limit outdoor activities and secure external ventilation systems there and at a nearby air facility in Atsugi.

"These measures are strictly precautionary in nature. We do not expect that any United States federal radiation exposure limits will be exceeded even if no precautionary measures are taken," the Navy said.

“We are on the brink. We are now facing the worst-case scenario,” said Hiroaki Koide, a senior reactor engineering specialist at the Research Reactor Institute of Kyoto University. “We can assume that the containment vessel at Reactor No. 2 is already breached. If there is heavy melting inside the reactor, large amounts of radiation will most definitely be released.”

The U.S. government mobilized emergency resources to help Japan grapple with the developing nuclear crisis, dispatching a team of Nuclear Regulatory Commission experts late Monday, activating an atmospheric radioactivity monitoring center at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in the Bay Area and rushing additional Navy ships to the region.

In the best-case scenario, the situation at the damaged reactors will take weeks, if not months, to stabilize, U.S. nuclear experts said.

"They do not have the situation under control," said Robert Alvarez, a nuclear expert at the Institute for Policy Studies and a former Energy Department official.

The company's acknowledgement that a "suppression pool" at the bottom of Unit 2, designed to serve as a last line of defense against a meltdown, was believed to have been breached could represent a major escalation of the crisis, said Victor Gilinsky, a former member of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.

"If that is true, then there is a path to the control room, the workers and the outside environment," he said.
