what time is it in firefly ?
when mal buys his ship or when the crew of serenity meet with the doc and shepherd what year is it ?

2200 ?

2400 ?

All I know is it's not any number before 2004

A google for firefly timeline will give you any number of these,
but my usual plug for a community datasource:

that is good, but my impression was that Jayne joined the crew before Inara rented a shuttle.

In fact I thought Inara had come on board just shortly before the Tams & Book (like no more than weeks before)...

But yeah, definitely in the 2500's for the entire timeline

In The Train Job, Inara said that shes been on the ship for 8 months. Although there is nothing to say how much time passed between Serenity and The Train Job, I don't think its very long based on River not really knowing where she is.

Also, there is no evidence pointing to Jayne joining before or after Inara rented the shuttle. That is speculative.

I think there's good grounds for suspecting that Inara signed on before Jayne. When Inara looks around the shuttle, it's not fixed up yet, which to me implies Serenity hasn't set off on her journeys. (And, of course, Serenity needs Inara aboard for her ambassadorial role.) When Jayne and Mal meet, however, Mal and Zoe are clearly on a job.

Yeah, at first I figured that Mal rented the shuttle not too long after getting Serenity based on how the shuttle looked, but the shuttles may not have come with the ship. When Mal sees Serenity for the first time, at least the port shuttle is not there. So the shuttle(s) could have been purchased later. In fact in the shooting script Inara comments that the shuttle looks newer than the rest of the ship.

As for Jayne, its still speculation. Jayne could have actually been the first person to join. When Jayne and the other 2 were holding Mal and Zoe at gun point, where were Wash and either Bester or Kaylee? I would find it hard to believe that they would have left anyone else to run about the ship. Seems more likly they would have had the entire crew come out and even search the ship for other crew as well as the stuff they were looking for.

The only things we know for sure is that Bester came before Wash and Kaylee (from Out of Gas), Jayne has been there less than 4 years (from Jaynestown), and Inara has been there for about 8 months (from The Train Job).

Aha. Thanks, really must read the scripts sometime. I pull back my comment to the level of mere speculation.

Its funny this would come up today. I watched Out of Gas yesterday and was thinking about the order that everyone joined and realized you cant tell from what they showed. Its too bad there wasnt just a little bit more info to actually tell when Jayne joined.

Mal buys the ship.
Still sitting on the dirt side, Mal brings aboard Zoe.
Next on board is Wash as the ship appears to have had no repairs yet.
Jayne is next, as now the ship is flying and making runs. ( ship repaired by the Temp mechanic Bester )( note the poor state of bay repairs in Jayne scene in Out Of Gas )
Next is Inara.. Repairs are done to fly, but no kaylee touch anywhere in sight ( Note the webbing mess hanging in passage way, he is looking for long term passengers to get money to keep off the ground.
Kaylee is next and needing to fix the ship up Kaylee style.

The Journey is the worthier part.

I agree with most of that except for the Kaylee part. It was pretty clear to me that Wash and Kaylee came aboard before they ever got Serenity flying. It seems to me they had hired Wash, had their first job lined up and were only waiting for buddy to get the engines online to get to it. Then in stepped Kaylee to save the day. The rest came afterwords.

Just my take.

Hack the planet!
