Click on their name to go to their profile and then you can send them a private message on the left hand side of the screen.
Hope that gives you a starting point.
As for this being off topic or not suitable then I wouldn't be too fussed. Plenty of other threads fit that criteria. It's one of the things keeping the site going. It's fairly relaxed set of forums.
The only 'tech' I know of is Haken and I can't see him having a problem with this. Of course I could be wrong....

i clicked on the name, and then clicked on 'contact' and got this message:
We apologize, but the file you are attempting to access is not available.
If the problem persists, please contact haken[at]fireflyfans.net
i saw no other way to contact someone

Srange. It worked for me just now.
Just to clarify:
Click on their username (in yellow at the top of each post) and this brings up the Member Profile page. On the left hand side their is a panel that says 'Message Me' at the top. Under this it says 'From:' followed by 'jenn58' (in your case) and then 'Message:'. Under this is a blank white box where you type your message and then click 'Send Message' when you are done.
They then receive an e-mail from you.
Hope that helps.
A quick thought:
Which version of the site are you using? It might be different for FFF.net 2.0 and it's still being tested etc so it might explain your error message.
