My memory is a bit faulty too. Don't recall her occupation, but I thought she was killed at her home and it was believed to have been by a burglar. I may have that confused with a murder they were investigating at the time that reminded her of her mother's death.

According to season two's Deep in Death, Johanna was a law professor.

She could easily have been both that and a civil rights lawyer.
Also, her murder was attributed to a botched robbery, but was actually deliberate. The fumbling of the case is what made Kate want to be a detective.

I seem to remember she and her father were out, Mom headed home ahead of them.

Also something about mom being on the phone and then sounds of a scuffle and the phone going dead... pretty sure i have the books and the show smushed in my brainpan.

***Possible Spoiler for Heat Wave***

I just re-watched season 1, and I'm about a third of the way through season 2 again, and I'm embarassed to say I don't clearly remember what was said in the series. However, I do remember very clearly, that in the book, Nikki Heat's mom was killed in her home while she was on the phone with Nikki.

I seem to recall that Beckett and her dad were supposed to meet her mom somewhere for dinner, but she never showed at dinner. Detective Raglin was waiting for them at their home. That was from a different episode than "Knockdown" but I'd have to hunt to tell you which one precisely.

I guess I'll just have to re-watch them again... ;-)

I think you're right... I remember something about a real estate agent, but I think that was her side job???Or she was going back to school???...I also thought it sounded funny, the civil rights thing...
