Just watched the movie,
"The Social Network".
The Facebook founder comes off as a real A-hole.
And I understand it is actually toned down from reality.

I know if everybody used their Facebook account like I do,
(I don't put personal info on the web),
it would be worth about $182 instead of $25 billion.

I saw The Social Network late last year and thought it was an excellent movie, well acted by all and yeah, Zuckerberg came off as a complete A-hole.

As for the real Facebook then I made the big mistake of joining when it was in it's infancy, before I knew what the site really was. I had some pics I wanted to show a mate (too many for e-mail) and he suggested this site as it had a gallery. I joined, got him as a friend, posted my pics and everything was luvvly jubbly. Then a couple of other folks I (genuinely) knew sent me friend requests and I accepted, we chatted and it was nice. Then people they knew but I didn't sent me requests. I ignored these and then one of my genuine friends starting 'poking' me and trying to get me to play these silly games.
That was it for me. It wasn't why I joined so I never went back. I've long since forgotten my password, which I regret as then I could wipe the profile. I still get notifications of friend requests but ignore them.

I do wonder if I hold the record for the least amount of Facebook friends. I think it was 3. Now that would be something to be proud of.

No, someone like me who never joined Facebook has got you beat on that. Doesn't stop me from getting spam email requests though. I also never had a MySpace page, nor do I Twitter. I'm not opposed to personal info on the 'net, as I do have my own website where I've given quite a bit of it, I just don't have the time for all that trivial nonsense. Besides, anyone who would want to "friend" me needs to have their head examined. I'm a loner who likes it that way.

Ahh, but if you never joined then it doesn't count. That's like saying you're never ever won anything on the lottery and then stating that you've never played. Or saying FF is crap and a complete waste of time when you haven't seen a single moment of it (people still do this though).

Me neither. And I have no intention of ever doing so, especially Twitter. Why would you feel the need to let folks know exactly what you are doing right at that moment? Or whatever it is. People who constantly text on phones are just as bad. Surely this is one of the reasons you meet up with friends - to tell them what's been going on and any stories you have to share with them.
I don't even really use a mobile phone. I got it for emergencies or when you need to contact someone urgently (i.e. meeting up or if one of you may be late etc). I've been in several situations recently where people (not friends) have needed a way to get hold of me and the first thing they've asked for is a mobile number. This really bugs me. I find it easier to tell them I don't have one and give them the landline number (which I pay for so why would I pay mobile charges as well) or my e-mail addy.

Me too. Between me and my girl we share a very select group of friends. She feels the same as I do about all this. We are much happier being in our own company. Who needs too many friends, most of which aren't real friends that you trust. They are just folks you hang around with.

I use facebook to connect with people I actually know. I dont have my address on it or phone numbers etc. I ignore friend requests from strangers and block anyone that sends unsavoury messages. Most of my friends know not to poke me or send requests to join them in silly games though a few keep trying (more fool them). I use the IM feature alot and have been known to chat with 5 different people at a time. i love that I can chat with my brother in the UK, my friends in Newcastle (NSW Australia) and my friends in other parts of AUStralia at the same time.

Facebook can be a great tool for connecting etc. I do think though that is overrated, me and my two best friends all don't have facebook pages. But I can understand how it could be fun if you want to. What annoys me is twitter. I don't care what celebrities ate for breakfast, or that my cousin is in a traffic jam right now. Again if someone likes doing that its fine, but I personally don't see the point. Plus I'll be talking to someone and instead of talking to me they'll bust out their phone/device and check their tweets etc. Errrrrrg.

I had to join Facebook b/c all my friends stopped using email.

I set up a fake name, and only those with my personal email address can find me, and I set my privacy settings so I can't be found through casual search...so that's basically eliminated the need for me to friend anyone I am not already friends with (and btw, its true about the oldsters - my old-timey friends are on there too, but blessedly they still prefer emails, even though they send me all those ridiculous chain emails...like 5 a day. But they post pics of themselves as youngsters on FB which is fun for me to see:))

Facebook can be quite fun if you manage it properly. I especially like it because people post their pictures and videos and I like looking through those, especially for those friends that live halfway (or all the way) across the continent. Or in other countries.

I use twitter to keep up with news/people I'm interested in, but I don't actually tweet anything myself as a general rule.

The great thing about social media is you can make it work for you, and there is really no need whatsoever to post your own personal business where others can see unless you want to.
