Lord of the Rings - Fellowship question

TNT is running the movies again.

Which is fine.

But when Hugo Weaving first appeared on screen as Elrond in 'Fellowship', there were audible chuckles and snickers.

This was at a premier showing, at midnight, as I recall. This pretty much assures that it was full of more 'die hard' Tolkein fans.

So, was this reaction to do Hugo's prior role in ' The Adventures of Priscilla, queen of the Desert ' ?

Or were folks sniggering at the image of Agent Smith, as an Elf ?

I thought he did a fine job, and while many could have played Elrond, Hugo pulled it off.

So, anyone care to fill me in on the joke ?

Well I have never seen 'The Adventures of Priscilla, queen of the Desert' and I have seen the Matrix a couple times but I don't see why seeing him as Elrond would be funny.

I think he did a really good job! (One of my favorite characters). I'm not a die hard Tolkien person either. I'm struggling reading The Hobbit. :)

Me either. I mean, he was the 'bad guy' in the Matrix, and in Fellowship.... I don't know. The Priscilla angle is the only other thing I could think of, though I've only seen like 10 minutes of that movie.

Figured some fellow sci-fi fans might have some insight...

It may have more to do with his appearance as an elf. I'm sure you've noticed that every other elf in the movie is what most people would consider pretty. While Hugo is not an ugly man his appearance seems a bit out of place compared to his fellow elves. I must admit the ears do look a bit odd on him.

That may be it. Though I don't how ' out of place ' his appearance is on the Elfdome scale of pretty, I can see how some might snicker at his appearance.

His first scene in the movie is rather...curious. A solo, kinda close up shot, from the view of Frodo,waking up with Elrond looking over him.

I kind of laughed when his first line was spoken. It was very Agent Smith. He may as well have followed it all the way through with, "Welcome to Rivendell... Mister Anderson." I mean, really. If he had used his normal voice, it wouldn't have been so bad, but he was totally Agent Smithing it the whole time. It's one of the weakest character choices of the movie, to me.
