Today marks the eight year anniversary of the final FOX broadcast for Firefly. Most are surely aware, but for any noobs around that don't know, that last broadcast was the pilot episode, "Serenity," which the network promoted as an "origin special."

And guess what? We're still holding, Mal.

Browncoats will follow the ennobling example of Lieutenant Hiroo Onoda, who continued fighting WWII on the Philippine island of Lubang until 9 March 1974 - nearly 29 years after the end of the war.

Humanitarian missions were sent to Lubang to try to persuade Lieutenant Onoda and his companions that the war really was over, but they would have none of it. Even today, Hiroo Onoda insists they believed the missions were enemy tricks designed to lower their guard. As a soldier, he knew it was his duty, without any orders to the contrary, to keep on fighting. - www.bbc.co.uk/history/worldwars/wwtwo/japan_no_surrender_01.shtml

To my knowledge Fox has the TV rights until 2012. It has been my hope that Universal, or some brave studio would have bought those rights by now and continue the story but.............

It is my belief that the strategy may be to hold out until those rights expire and a studio can then pick it up for a song. A reboot is not out of the question, look at Star Trek.

We hold........until the Captain comes back.

It's always been my hope that when 20th Century Fox's rights to Firefly expire in 2012 and revert to Joss that he will produce more Firefly independently... a la Dr. Horrible.

As technology and distribution becomes less expensive and available, I can envision Joss having his own studio and being free from studios second guessing him. He could start out by creating a kind of pay per view web based Firefly mini series, and also sell DVDs with extra goodies too. As the success of this grows, and it will, then bigger productions can be made.

We already know that Joss and the cast would love to get together again and create more Firefly... the problem so far has been the rights being held by studios who don't want to put money into a project they don't see making a profit. We know better... it just has to be done right.

And yes... we hold, until the Captain comes back.

Can't stop the Signal [GG]

We hold until Joss says it's completely and utterly done. And even then, the flame will be alight in our hearts for more from the 'Verse from somewhere.

An odd coincidence: at the Shiloh Horse Rescue, Jill's sweet old horse Serenity died the same day.

Maybe someday she'll name one of the rescues "Firefly".

I love Firefly/Serenity too but, isn't Hiroo Onada's actions rather pathetic? Even Mal knew when the war was over eg. "War's over. Now we're all just folk." And no, I don't really see his later decision to misbehave a continuation of the war.

As Joss said of the cancelled show:"When does love become necrophilia?"

I like being Browncoat "folks". The war may be over, but I like being here and a part of a community that does so much good for others.

Who knows what will happen. Firefly could get rebooted, Mr. Whedon could get the rights as 11th Hour says and do something like Dr. Horrible with it. It may not come back at all. The original and only is pretty damn good. Good enough to satisfy me if there is never any more.

I'm willing to hang out and see what happens here with friends. No place I'd rather be. :)
