Don't know who Jeff Dillon is but I stumbled across a blog entry and photo gallery while combing San Diego newspapers for more details (he appears to have underestimated the size of the crowd, btw):

There was a also a really great paragraph where the author said Firefly "might have been the best sci-fi television series ever".
