Fringe Moving to Firefly's Friday Night Death Slot

DVR ratings are factored in, but not weighed as heavily. It's all about the ad buys, and those who DVR skip most ads, so they're not worth as much, in the eyes of the suits.
Fringe's ratings have been dropping since midway through last year. It could be dropping viewers, or they could be time-shifting more. But either way, it's an expensive show that's not making money.
I just hope they get to wrap it up. 3 seasons isn't so bad.

I'll add my vote for Fringe, consistently one of the best shows currently in production. Yes, John Noble as Walter Bishop is the high point, but there are many other elements I love as well. They may have lost viewers this year due to the focus on the alternate universe, but I think it is getting better each week. I do hope they are warned ahead of time if this will be the last season.

Imagine Firefly only different--not the plot, but the characters and the relationships--
1.) Mal and River are the same person, or rather, River starts out thinking she's Mal and over the course of two seasons discovers that she's River.
2.) Book has lost part of his mind (literally) and channels Wash on a regular basis. Over the course of two seasons, he discovers that before he lost his mind he was basically Niska, and then he tries to undo all the atrocities he committed when he was Niska.
2.) Practically everyone is, or was once, or will become, or has a counterpart in an alternate universe who is/was/will become--a badass.
3.) Hard science fiction in prime time! Whoohoo! The entire series is a meditation on science and responsibility that would make Mary Shelley proud.
4.) The pilot, on the badass scale is kinda on the lowest rung (think Shindig or something like that). It felt kinda long and did all that "setting things up" stuff that folks are obsessed with in pilots. It gets awesome immediately there after. The season 2 episode "White Tulip" guest starring Buckaroo Banzai himself rates up there with Out of Gas and Ariel for me. As good as tv sci fi gets.
5.) All this set in the present day, with oodles of naturalism and dark conspiracies that actually get explained during the course of the show so they can move on to new storylines! Whoohoo again!
6.) WARNING: It will effectively ruin the X-files for you. After Fringe, X-files looks veerrrrrry dated indeed.

The long haul isn't a problem, I love shows like that. I'm a big fan of new BSG and Lost.

That's partly why I asked coz I'd heard it got a lot better. If it wasn't for time constraints at the time I would have watched further but it wasn't to be.

When Fox announced last month that it was moving 'Fringe' to Friday nights at 9PM ET -- a.k.a. "The Death Slot" -- fans immediately feared the worst, despite the show's producers saying the move was a positive one.
Now, blastr.com reports that in a cheeky self-referential nod to fans' fears and the fate of other shows in the dreaded slot, the first Friday night episode is called 'Firefly.' http://blastr.com/2010/12/fringess-1st-friday-night.php
Remember 'Firefly'? Joss Whedon's post-'Buffy' space western launched in 2002 to great acclaim, but after falling (Friday night) ratings Fox canceled it after airing only 11 episodes. Gulp.
Despite its short life on network TV 'Firefly' launched the careers of stars Morena Baccarin ('V') and Nathan Fillion ('Castle'), and the show's writers have gone on to work their magic on series like 'Battlestar Galactica,' 'Haven,' 'Supernatural' and 'Warehouse 13.'
This kind of in-joking is nothing new to 'Fringe' producers, who often have their tongues firmly in their cheeks. Previous episode titles have paid homage to numerous influences, ranging from Philip K. Dick and 'Blade Runner' ('Do Shapeshifters Dream of Electric Sheep?'), to the boardgame 'Clue' ('Olivia. In the Lab. With the Revolver.') and the poet Robert Frost ('The Road Not Taken').
Although Fox has said it has no plans to cancel 'Fringe,' ratings have declined recently and fewer than 5 million people watched a recent episode, which is definitely not a good sign. By comparison, Fox canceled 'Firefly' after the audience dropped to just under 4.5 million.
At least the nod to 'Firefly' shows that 'Fringe' producers know the trouble they could be in come January when their show moves to the pit of despair, Friday nights.
'Fringe' airs tonight, 9PM ET on Fox.
New episodes will air Friday nights, 9PM ET on Fox from January 21.
