I completely agree that it's a tool within a toolbox. Especially in this day and age of digital film etc I think it is an essential tool. But, as you say, it can be overused to detrimental effect (CGI Yoda in the SW prequels). But then you also get films like LOTR, Potter and Avatar that couldn't achieve their look without extensive CGI. It definitely has it's place but then so do models and traditional techniques. I think of LOTR (again) that used, relatively simple, split screen shots for characters of different sizes. Jurassic Park combined models and CGI in the same shots. Moon used models with very little CGI and looked stunning.
The best CGI shots are the ones where you can't tell its CGI. It allows film makers to shoot the way they want without having to work the shot around cables etc because they know it can be taken out later.
Both have their place it's just how they are used that makes them good or bad.

Well Herbie is an easy one. But I don't recognize the other two in the archway.
If it wasn't a VW then what was it?
Surely it would be easier to get a VW and do a repaint - but it may not be his way to take this easiest route.
If he's up for some suggestions and he likes the cars then how about:

Christine - the '58 (or '59 depending on your take) Plymouth Fury from the movie of the same name. Depends if you're willing for him to see a horror movie.

The Coyote from Hardcastle and McCormick (sp?), or Speedbuggy from the cartoon of the same name.
Some other suggestions that as a kid in the *cough* 70's *cough* I tried to do myself. I had a number of General Lee clones until they released an actual set.
Chris, the Viper is a completed plactic model that has the feel of an actual assemble-yourself feel to it. In that it's fragile. Made by Joyride and not nearly as good a quality as the Hasbro X-Wing beside it, but it'll have to do. I have the Cylon Raider as well, but am afraid to take it out of the package.

This one's not mine , but I had the Aurora kit and it built up beautifully , back in the day.
I'd say it was my personal favorite...It was just so bitchin'.
