Cut the third link so you have 2, 1 (that's been cut) and 4.

1st night: pay with one.
2nd night: pay with two, take one back
3rd night: pay with the one you got back
4th night: hand over the four, take back the two and the one
5th night: pay with one
6th night: pay with two, take one back

At the end, you have the one cut link still, and have paid six.

DT: took me 10 minutes of thinking, another 2 to type it up. I smoked a lot of pot when I was dating a stoner a few years back. Haven't much lately.

The stoner, who'd been smoking almost daily for decades and likely still is, invented a method of etching tiny circuits onto chips and started his own company. He's brilliant. Pot helps him "focus" and be mellow, he said, though he did not smoke the day before he had to be "on" as he called it, like if he had to meet with investors.

Um... thanks. But as I tell my students: I don't think it's intelligence as much as stubbornness. And cockiness? Solving problems like this isn't so bad as long as you believe that there is a solution, that it's logical, and that you can find it. Easiest way to get lost is to over-complicate it, figure it's impossible and give up.

The ones I think are impossible are the word riddles, like Bilbo/Gollum riddles. It's like you have to know some multi-meaning word or forget it. I suck at those.
