Yes, I know they weren't and that the hero is a Marine, I was referring to what a person said regarding marines. My friend seemed to think real marines were no better, but that ain't Avatar's fault. Just acknowledging that I might have started off with a bit of a bias on account of someone telling me it's better than my favorite movies and then telling me about how negatively it portrays the Marine Corps (both of which were lies of course).

Not upsetting, just a tired unoriginal idea. The entire private security company (save our hero and the chopper girl) were one dimensional B Flat bad guys. The Navi were interesting, our hero was interesting, the special effects were amazing, but the big bad and the plot... simple, lame and overdone.
I like more complex villains, like the operative.

Well, sure, I have other copies of his older films. But a lot of that was changes in technology.
And those are mostly releases separated by many years, mostly.
In this case, it being just a few months between the releases, and knowing the good stuff would be coming with this one, I held off.

I like complex villains, too. But in this case, it seemed like the natural villain, as in - that's probably how it would play out. I suppose making the main baddies deeper, more conflicted perhaps, would have worked, but that would have shifted the focus, and it seemed that Cameron was simply more interested in spending time with the Na'Vi than the humans (being that much of the deleted material does develop the human plot more).

I'm in agreement with you. I am a big Cameron fan as you can tell, so I expected a lot stronger story for this film. I'm hoping he focuses on the story more for the sequel.
